Chapter 20

Maybelle's point of view

"Please mom," I begged, following her to the study where Brandon and my dad were. They looked at me but otherwise said nothing.

"Honey, you know the rules. We can't let Drew have the throne if he's with that girl," Mom said, sitting down next to my dad.

I glared at them both. "You're telling me that the only reason that you won't let your oldest son take the throne is because of his soulmate! Don't you get it? She has enough self control, better than any of you!" I snapped.

My father stood up angrily. "Now young lady-"

"No! She spent weeks in this place pretending to be a human, do you realize how many times she's been around blood but never lashed out or took a sip? Why? Because she has enough self control to not lose it!" I yelled.

"And may I remind you of the deer incident?" my father said.

I cocked my eyebrow. "And may I remind you of how it was you two who drank the deer dry because you were so thirsty that you forgot that we needed to feed!" I responded, mocking my father's tone.

They both glared at me while I took a deep breath. "You only have fifteen more years before the throne needs to fall to someone else," I reminded them . "When those fifteen years run out, any vampire who kills you both gets the throne. Your only option is to let Drew have it."

"There's Layton," my mother said.

"He doesn't want the damn throne!" Brandon butted in, making my parents glare at him in return.

"We're persuading him," my mother told him.

"Sending hunters to kill him and his soulmate isn't going to make him want the throne! In fact, he told me that he'd rather move to Canada with Drew and Sabrina then be here," I told them.

That got their attention. They had no power in Canada. "There's no way Layton would-"

"Check the tracking device you put on him, he's there now," I sneered, wrapping one arm around Brandon.

They were silent as my father logged online and began typing at a fast rate. He watched the screen for a few seconds before confirming to his wife that Layton indeed was in Canada. I smiled inwardly at how fast they made it there.

"You want the hands of the throne to fall to me in fifteen years, or a vampire who manages to kill you both?" I asked.

"You sent your guards out hunting Layton, so they're most likely dead. There's nothing protecting you," Brandon reminded.

My parents were silent as they mulled over their options, but they were limited. I leaned against Brandon and patiently waited for them to make a decision.

Finally, my father looked at me and sighed through his nose. "Call Drew."
