Carter's POV

I was in my bedroom when the alarms began to ring around the house and the lights began to flash as if someone was flicking them on and off repeatedly.

I ran out of my bedroom, looking around the house for the source of trouble when I heard Sky shout for me from the other side of the house.

"Sky?" I called out in panic.

No reply.

I then looked at my phone to see if I could contact anyone but there was no signal.

"Shit!" I muttered under my breath.

That's when the head of security began speaking through the house speakers telling us to go to the safe rooms.

Then I heard the gunshot through the speakers and was almost knocked onto the ground from the volume of the shot.

My instincts were telling me to go and find Sky, but I knew that that would be a risky move which could put us both in danger. So I went to the nearest safe room, assuming that she would have done the same.

When I got into the safe room, I locked it from the inside in a panic. I had no idea what was going on, but I knew it wasn't good.

The head of security had just been shot down and now my sister was alone somewhere in the house.

Everything in my head was telling me to go and make sure she was okay, but I knew that that would be a stupid move so I stayed put.

As much as I wanted to take action, I knew that I had to wait for someone to come and find me. I couldn't risk getting shot once I knew that whoever had attacked us had guns. It just wasn't worth it.

I looked around the safe room, which was all white. It was stocked with food and water, had multiple beds and a phone stuck to the wall.

A phone.

I'd forgotten about the phones in the safe rooms! They would still work despite the phonelines being cut off in the house.

I thought about whether I should call Sky, but knew that her mobile wouldn't get the call anyway. I'd have to try the safe room numbers after calling my parents.

I grabbed the phone off the wall and rang my Mom. I knew that she would most likely be the easiest to get a hold of and I needed to make sure she was okay, as well as telling her that I was safe.

It rung just once before she picked up and answered me.

"Kids? Is that you? Are you okay? What's going on?" she rambled frantically.

"It's Carter. I'm in one of the safe rooms. Are you okay?" I asked, attempting to remain calm.

"We're fine. We're on our way home right now, we're coming as fast as we can but we panicked when we couldn't get through to either of you. The emergency at the base was a trap to get us away from the house." she explained.

"The phonelines are dead, this is the only one that will work." I said. "Do you know who's broken in? or why?"

"We're not sure yet honey, but we're sure as hell going to find out. How's Sky? Is she okay?"

"Sky isn't with me." I stated simply. "She was at the other side of the house, she must have gone to a different safe room. I didn't want to risk going to find her after hearing the gunshot."

"You did the right thing Carter, thank you. I'm sure she's okay. Wait...did you just say gunshot?"

"Yeah, it came through on the speakers. Your head of security was talking to us and then..."
