the city: does gravity crush?

a lady threw herself from the 17th floor
of that high rise last tuesday
neck broken on impact
did she feel that
or was it too quick?
did she think she was flying
or pretending she was already dead?

those short seconds
that little eternity
when she was just a woman
suspended in air
i wonder if her eyes were open
on a world ready to meet her one last time
i wonder if she dove like a swan
if she spiraled if she sailed
if she laughed if she cried out for her mom
or if she panicked and flailed
and reached up towards her window
nails ripping through solid air
but the pavement had its mind all made up
