Dad came up to my room before dinner. 'Your mum was really upset with the way you spoke to her,' he said. 'What did you say to her?' I was sitting at my desk doing homework. I closed the laptop screen.

'Nothing. I'd had a long day. She pounced on me as soon as I walked in the door.'

'She thinks it's your hormones. But that's been going on for years. It's like we hardly even know you sometimes. Your grades aren't great. You're disinterested in a lot of things. Maybe we should book another appointment with Jeanette?'

I crossed my arms over my chest.

'Just because I'm not interested in the things you're interested in, doesn't mean I'm not interested in anything.'

'Look Ivy, I know things are difficult at the moment, but they're difficult for us too. This is unchartered territory. We're all in survival mode. So you need to improve your attitude.'

'Okay,' I said, swinging side to side in my desk chair. 'I'm sorry. I shouldn't have spoken to mum that way. I was frustrated that I wasn't getting the support for my art like Josh gets for his tennis. That's all.'

'We'll talk to your art teacher. We're here to support you.' Dad stood up and smoothed his pants down with his hands. 'We all need to support each other at the moment, okay Ivy?'

'Okay. Sorry dad.'
