29. For The Best

Liam.

I stood in the hospital room with my baby, feeling more guilt then ever before. The only sound in the room was the beeping of her heart-monitor. I could faintly hear the radio, which was playing in the room next door, where a man slept who had a heart attack this morning. I met him earlier when I accidently went into the wrong room.

Madison lay peacefully in the crinkly white sheets, quietly sleeping. An IV was inserted in her right hand, along with a big silver clip on her tiny index finger and a little neon yellow hospital bracelet on her wrist. I've had Madison for one day and I've already managed to almost kill her.

On her forehead, she had three little pink stitches from where she hit her head on my floor. Madison was sleeping when she got the stitches, so I made the choice to give her pink ones. Most of her clothes are pink, so her stitches will go with everything. I called Danielle the moment we arrived at the hospital, and she's on her way now. I have no doubt in my mind that Danielle is going to try and take Madison back. I also have no doubt in my mind that she will win, and she will take Madison back. And maybe it's for the best. I just wanted a chance to be a father.

I am an irresponsible man. I can't even deny it. I'm a busy guy, I party, do concerts, get drunk, I got Danielle pregnant twice, hopped between Danielle, Sophia and Olivia... I'm pretty sure everyone would be better off without me. I brushed the hair out of Madison's eyes, and sat down in the chair beside her bed.

Slowly her eyelids flickered open, revealing her big brown eyes. "Daddy," She whispered, voice scratchy. "Hi baby," I greeted, smiling down at her. "Will you sing for me?" She asked, gulping. "Alright," I agreed, tired. I don't know what I should sing. I don't really know any kid-ish songs besides twinkle twinkle little star, which seems a little too young for Madison to want to hear. Sighing, I decided on Hallelujah.

"I've heard there was a secret chord
That David played, and it pleased the Lord
But you don't really care for music, do you?
It goes like this
The fourth, the fifth
The minor fall, the major lift
The baffled king composing Hallelujah," I stopped and took a pause as Madison began closing her eyes again.

"Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah." I turned around, and saw Danielle cautiously stepping into the room with Max and Megan at her side. I turned back to Madison and continued the song.

"Your faith was strong but you needed proof
You saw her bathing on the roof
Her beauty in the moonlight overthrew you
She tied you to a kitchen chair
She broke your throne, and she cut your hair
And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah," Danielle, Max and Madison all sat down on the fold-out sofa behind me.

"Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah."

"Baby I have been here before
I know this room, I've walked this floor
I used to live alone before I knew you.
I've seen your flag on the marble arch
Love is not a victory march
It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah," I sang. "Liam," Said Danielle, "Can we please talk?"

"Let me finish," I replied harshly, immediately feeling bad.

"Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah,"

"There was a time when you let me know
What's really going on below
But now you never show it to me, do you?
And remember when I moved in you
The holy dove was moving too
And every breath we drew was Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Maybe there's a God above
But all I've ever learned from love
Was how to shoot at someone who outdrew you
It's not a cry you can hear at night
It's not somebody who has seen the light
It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah
