30. Making Changes

Liam.

"Wake up you dumb shit."

Those are the first words I heard when I came back into consciousness. I could smell hospital, which I'd smelled only hours ago. I'm back. Hip-hip-hooray. I slowly opened my eyes, but even trying to do that felt like my poor eyelids were trying to lift 50 lb dumbbells. When I was finally able to see, I saw my four best friends and their families standing around me.

"Watch your language, idiot." Was the next sentence I heard, before a smacking sound and a yelp. I was able to see that it was Louis and Eleanor. Eleanor was covering Cameron's ears with the palms of her hands, and scowling at Louis. Louis was rubbing his upper arm, frowning at El.

"What a nice way to wake up," I whispered hoarsely, attempting to sit up. "You're up and awake," Niall commented. "Yes Niall, I'm up." I confirmed, leaning back on what felt like a big stack of pillows. Niall smiled, his arm around Holly. Mason and an adorable little girl stood in front of them, whom I recognized from Niall's pictures as Addison, Holly's non-biological daughter.

"You were in an accident," Said Perrie, pursing her lips apologetically. "You smashed into a truck and I guess you got whiplash or something and hit your head on the steering wheel and got knocked out," Perrie explained, "The truck re-straightened out and kept driving, but you kinda just kept driving even though you were unconscious and went off the road into a nice big tree."

"Lovely," I mumbled sarcastically, feeling my head. Above my left eyebrow I could feel the most puffy goose-egg ever. This is going to be just gorgeous for the fans. I bet I look dashing. "No major injuries, though." Perrie said, smiling. "Only a goose-egg and a sprained wrist. You'll be fine in no-time."

"The ambulance brought you here about three hours ago, and we all showed up within the last hour," Said Niall, "And we brought food! In case you were hungry or anything." He pointed to a table across the room which was covered with a selection of McDonalds burgers, fries, salads and fountain drinks.

"Thanks Lad," I replied, taking a deep breath. "Hey Uncle-Bunckle." Said Emily, climbing up onto the bed. "I brought Sally and Tigey and Polka for you to play with," She told me, taking out her pink purse and retrieving three stuffed animals. One purple puppy, a tiger-beanie, and a spotted-kitten.

"Hey muffin." I said, "Thanks."

"Are Danielle and the kids here?" I asked unsurely. "I'd really like to see them."

"Danielle was heading back home with Mads and the kids, but I think they may have turned around when they heard what happened." Said Eleanor.

"We did." Said a familiar voice. I turned my attention towards the door, where Danielle stood with Madison in her arms, and Megan & Max standing beside her. Max was holding a basket of assorted treats and Megan was hugging a teddy bear. "Danielle," I whispered, surprised that she'd come back to see me after all I'd done.

Danielle's words from just 3 hours ago flashed in my mind. "You're right, this won't happen again. Because you're not getting another chance."

I immediately felt my chest constrict. Why would Danielle come back with the kids if she had no intention of me being in their lives? "You're here." I finally finished my sentence.

"I am." Danielle confirmed, walking towards the hoard of people. "I heard about the accident. Are you okay?"

I nodded, yet still shrugged. "I'll never be okay without you and the kids in my life."

I smiled thoughtfully. "Ha, good one," Danielle almost snorted. "You're terrible." She muttered, shaking her head, yet the smallest smile still pulled at her mouth. "I can't express how sorry I am," I told her, letting out a deep breath.

"I know trying to win you back into my life won't be the easiest task, but trust me, I'm up for the challenge. I know I've promised that before, but this time is different. I've had a brush with death. I realized how much family really means to me. Everyone here, not just you and the kids, but my brothers and Perrie and El, and even Holly," I smiled at Holly and she smiled back.

Danielle looked at me, and looked at me, not breaking the gaze, "You're gonna have to do much better then that."

"You're the most amazing woman in the world. You light up my life. Your eyes, your smile, your personality. I don't know how I let it slip away for all these years. You're my person. And the kids," I looked down towards my children who were grinning widely.

"They're perfect. Us argumentative, grudge-holding, bitter adults created the most perfect children we could have ever asked for. And I only ask to have one more chance to raise them along-side you, because I can promise you I won't mess up this time. I promise. I promise, I promise, I promise."

"Fine." Danielle whispered.

"You can have one more chance."

Danielle.

I'm the most ridiculous person in the world for giving Liam this chance. This is literally the last one.

If he blows it, I'm cutting off his balls and feeding them to a shark. So help me God.
