Chapter 20

I couldn't contain my anger any longer. She was blatantly lying to me and I couldn't stomach being in the same room with her a second longer. Eva was driving me mad, I knew from the first time I laid eyes on her that she was hiding something. But the excitement that I found my mate, overshadow all the things that was screaming at me right now. She was a liar. A good, fucking gorgeous liar.

Colin met me in your office. I shut off our family's mindlink and made my way to his office.

I entered the empty office immediately drawn to the large window overlooking the lake. Closing my eyes I tried calming the anger inside and regain focus. I needed to know what the hell was going on and what Eva was mixed up in.

"Creed." Colin's greeting was dripping with exhaustion and worry. I knew that finding that dead wolf brought up bad memories when he met Celeste. If only I could've been here to help him, but I couldn't help myself let alone him at the time. "You find anything?"

"Not sure, but I need to see the file on Eva."

"Does she have something to do with this?! Because if she does, I gotta tell you man.." Colin's accusing eyes was enough to make me tell him what I knew. But if I did that, he wouldn't listen to anything else I had to say but lock Eva up right away before I could discover what she was hiding. Maybe she should be locked up, but something was stopping me.

"I know, Colin! I said I wasn't sure."

"Creed I know what she means to you. Hell if this was another time and place, I would welcome her with open arms. But there is something about her. I can't put my finger on it." Colin had moved to his chair sinking down in it, his eyes staying trained on me. He opened one of the drawers pulling out a folder tossing it on the desk. "I have to warn you that I wasn't going to show this to you. You might want to trust me on this."

I slumped down in one of the chairs across him and looked at the file Colin on the desk. Ignoring his warning, I picked it up and thumb through it and stopped and read the part about her mate. "So it's true, Alpha Vigil, her rejected mate, is looking for her?"

"Yes."

I wasn't sure how to process that piece of information. So she was telling me the truth about her mate searching for her. My wolf angered at the thought of someone trying to steal our mate. I kept reading and stopped. "Is this true?" I read each word painfully.

"You don't look want to look at the last few pages." Colin shook his head trying to warn me but after reading it I had to see for myself. I flipped over the pages and the pictures made my heart stop. My beautiful Eva laid in a hospital bed with her face covered with cuts and bruises, busted lip, two black eyes that were swollen shut. There were marks around her neck that indicated strangulation and a couple of pictures that showed blue and black spots that decorated her midsection, arms, and legs. There was bone protruding out of her right arm and the hand appeared to be crushed.

"How did you get this information? When I went to the council none of this was in her records."

"Carsons." That name made my skin crawled. The Carsons ruled the council behind the scenes with fear and intimidation. Add the fact that Jeremiah Carson tried to harm Celeste and Colin, was enough for my dislike for the whole clan. Now I had another reason to hate that family. "They presided over the proceedings when allegations were made against Vigil."

"They covered this shit up and Vigil received no punishment?" I placed my hand over the unrecognizable picture of Eva. My heart aching for the pain and trauma Eva endured.

"He received a verbal warning. I got this information from one of my members who came from that pack. She was a nurse and took pictures at the time. She even risked her life to get those pictures to the investigating team from the council, but nothing ever came of it. She decided to keep the pictures and left that pack after what happen. There were some uproar to what their alpha did to his mate, but in the end he used fear and threaten banishment if they spoke against him. Until Eva showed up here, Lilah along with a lot of others thought she was dead. Lilah told me that one day she just disappeared and was never seen or heard from again. I went to Uncle Silas and he did some digging and found there was no charges brought against him. Of course, the Carsons oversaw the proceedings.,"

"Colin, her mate nearly kills her and nothing happens? Even those asshole shouldn't have let this go?"

"You know how they operate. Maybe if she was a full blooded werewolf things may have turned out different. But she isn't, she is more human than wolf and you know they have no respect or care about her because of it. I know firsthand how they value humans in our society. Look, after getting this information, I gave Eva some leeway, because no female should be treated that way by her mate.

But if she a danger to my family or pack, I will deal with her." Colin voice was firm with a warning that even though she was mate, he would treat her like anybody else who threaten his family. I couldn't blame him, but I knew there was more to it than she was letting on.

"Give me a couple of days, and I will get to the bottom of this." I stood to leave, deciding if I should return to Eva or process what I learned about her alone.

"Creed, until you find out what she is really about, I can't let her be around my family."

"I understand."

"I just hope Celeste does, she has grown an attachment to Eva and so has Caden."

"Well I don't envy you that discussion. Thanks for giving me the time. I'll talk to you later." I left his office my wolf leading me to her room.
