The boy walked slowly towards home, wishing he could turn and run in the other direction.
He took his mind off what waited for him at home by reciting what he could remember of his history notes.
The boy had only walked to the end of the street when a small car pulled up beside him, the window rolled down.
The boy glanced across and saw Vin leaning across the passenger seat.
"Do you want a lift, Callum?"
The boy paused, knowing what would happen if his father saw him in Vin's car, before he nodded.
"Where do you live?"
"Windermere Street."
"Near the bowling alley, right? I’m not all that familiar with this town yet."
The boy nodded again.
They drove there in silence, aside from the quietly playing radio.
Vin pulled over at the top of Windermere Street. "Do you need a lift to school tomorrow?" Vin asked the boy. "It's a long way to walk."
The boy shook his head firmly.
"Alright. See you tomorrow, I guess."
The boy got out of the car with a mumbled ‘thanks’.
The boy waited until the car turned around and drove out of sight, before he turned and walked back two streets, to Chester Road.
