Danielle

"Congratulations Danielle, it's a baby girl." Said the doctor. I don't hear my baby screaming. Aren't babies supposed to scream when they're born? I struggled to keep my eyes open to see my daughter, but my vision was blurry and I felt like passing out again. It must be the drugs they pumped into my system. I can't think straight either. The drugs were supposed to knock me out for the entire birth while they did the c-section, but I woke up.

"Is she okay?" I managed to ask, heart beating like crazy.

"We're checking on her, now. She was born at 20 weeks premature, which is very dangerous. Your little girl is very, very tiny. She'll be in the hospital for atleast 14 weeks, even if nothing is horribly wrong." He said pulling off his rubber gloves. They were covered in blood.

"It's okay, honey. You did well." Said my father, squeezing my hand. I turned to look at him, and he was giving me a proud smile. I don't remember my dad being here...

I turned back to the swarm of nurses. Squinting  my eyes, I was able to see the outline of a baby being carried out the hospital room  in a pink blanket.

"Where are they taking my daughter?" I quietly asked, feeling my voice go hoarse.

"To check on her for any problems." The doctor said, dropping the rubber glubs into a trash can.

"I have to go help check on your daughter. She is going to have either mental or physical defects. But who knows? Maybe you have yourself a miricale baby." He lightly smiled.

"I'll be right back with your daughter's birth certificate. The nurses will just have to fill in the weight and height,  and they have to check the baby for any life-threatening problems. When I bring the birth certificate back, you can fill in the name-portion whenever you feel ready."

I nodded, breathing quickly and deeply. I forgot I'm going to have to name my daughter... I can't even remeber which names I liked... I can barely think. I feel like falling asleep...but I want to see my baby. I want to see my brand new daughter. I also want to see Max and Madison. I miss them so much already.

A few minutes later, a nurse came in with the birth certificate. She put it down on a tray beside me, an apologetic grimace on her face. "What's wrong?" I yawned  as my dad took the birth certificate.

"As I suspected...your daughter...she has some serious life problems that can never be fixed."

Those are the words that changed my life forever.
