THIRTY-NINE

it was awkward.

so awkward.

the past week and a bit at home had been more awkward between thea and her dad, then she could ever remember.

the brunette exhaled as she walked into the kitchen to make her breakfast. to her surprise, her dad was already up and downstairs.

she brushed off her surprise as she poured herself a bowl of cereal. her dad was sat at the tiny table, drinking his coffee, before he cleared his throat.

"thea."

she hummed in response.

"we need to talk, schatz."

thea paused, a spoonful of cornflakes hovering in the air. she sighed, nodding as she placed the bowl down on the counter and sat down next to her dad at the table.

"im sorry for-"

"i wanted to start with-"

they both cut themselves off.

"can i go first?"  her dad spoke. thea licked her lips, nodding.

"i just wanted to start off with saying im so proud of you. for getting into the uni. i knew you would be able to do it. i-i mean, you're cooking and baking is amazing. so i wouldn't have expected anything else."

the german girl looked at the ground shyly, smiling as she mumbled a "thank you."

"and also that im sorry for how i reacted-"

"no you don't have to say sorry for that," thea cut him off.

"-no i do. i didn't even say congratulations or anything. i just got mad, and im sorry for that."

"its okay," she mumbled.

"and third, you were right."

thea frowned, "right about what?"

"your mum would be happy for you," he exhaled, "and she would be so proud of you too. if...if she was here, she would be encouraging you to go. so that is what im going to do."

thea's eyebrows raised in shock.

"as much as i would want you to stay...its only for my own selfish reasons. so, i think you should go really. make both of us proud."

she swallowed the lump in her throat as she got out of her chair, pulling her dad into a hug. he squeezed her back tightly, knowing that this time next month, she wouldn't be here with him.
