Yan Tuo walked far away from the hotel before he opened his phone and called Xiong Hei.

In theory, he had been missing for nearly a day and night. In his imagination, Xiong Hei must have been eagerly waiting for his call, but to his surprise, it took quite a while for Xiong Hei to answer, his voice not without excitement: "Yan Tuo?"

Yan Tuo said, "It's me. Where am I going now?"

He carefully distinguished the unclear background noise coming from the receiver. Xiong Hei shouldn't be indoors. The voice on the other end was somewhat noisy, and he even heard barking dogs.

Xiong Hei said, "Wait a moment... I'll send you the address. Go directly to Ah Peng's place... Damn, get rid of this damn dog!"

The latter sentence was obviously directed at someone nearby.

Yan Tuo had a bad feeling: He had just answered, "It's me. Where am I going now?", deliberately not revealing his previous movements, thinking that Xiong Hei would definitely inquire and would definitely come to pick him up—only to find out that he didn't do either.

This was unreasonable, unless Xiong Hei had more urgent matters to attend to and temporarily couldn't afford to pay attention to him.

He asked, "Where are you now?"

Xiong Hei chuckled twice, "I'm busy, Yan Tuo. It's good that you're back. We'll talk when I get back. Hang up."

Yan Tuo wanted to ask more, but the call had already been disconnected.

The address Xiong Hei gave was a rural-urban integration community, located in a remote area. Going west for a while led straight into the wilderness. The first phase had been occupied for less than a year, the second phase had just been completed, and the third phase was still under construction. Therefore, the majority of homeowners were either in the process of renovation or hadn't even started yet. The occupancy rate was surprisingly low. There were only two or three households with lights on in a building of more than ten floors.

Judging from the building number and apartment number, it was tucked away in the corner of the community. Yan Tuo made his way in, feeling like a lost soul wandering through the garden—there was not even a stray cat in sight.

After finding the right building, he pressed the elevator button and went straight to the third floor. The protective wooden boards inside the elevator car had not been removed yet, and there were two or three renovation advertisements scattered on top.

After getting out of the elevator, Yan Tuo looked around. It was a layout of two elevators serving two households each. Both doorways were piled with renovation materials, and the anti-theft doors were covered in dust, with the plastic film still intact.

Xiong Hei didn't give the room number, only saying it was "on the third floor." Which one could it be?

As Yan Tuo was hesitating, one of the room doors opened, and Lu Xian's head popped out. "I knew it was you as soon as I heard the elevator. There are no occupants in this building yet."

As he spoke, he held the door wide open and welcomed Yan Tuo in.

The room was a large flat, with four bedrooms, two living rooms, and two bathrooms. There was quite a contrast between the inside and outside. From the outside, it looked like no one lived there, but inside, the decoration was quite complete, albeit messy. Various takeout boxes and convenience food bags were scattered around, and there were more than a dozen pairs of the same plastic slippers arranged haphazardly at the entrance.
