Ch 11

June 30 - July 1, 2010

Escorting Bill from my room, I silently shut the door. Humming from my overhead fan filled the void of silence that previously hovered over the room.

Eyes wondering, they met a reflection from the mirror. Hair disarranged upon my head allowed a messy bun to stoop low against my scalp. Mascara left streaks of black dried on my face. Ocean colored eyes remained red with anger and blood-shot from recent tears. Wrapping around the rings of my eyes, dark and hollowing, eye shadow clashed in a mangle of colors. My cheeks paled from their usual rose in a ghostly white. The lips staring back were in a thin line with a loss of color.

My breath ceased for a moment as I stole a double take of the reflection staring back at me. Me. Was this me? Before this, I never once had I over reacted.

Dragging my steps, I found myself standing in front of yet another mirror. This time the countertop stopped me from tearing away the duplicate image. Condescending to the height of the sink, I began to splash cold liquid against my face. Colors curled around the drain with the disappearing water to the black hole waiting to consume whatever came its way.

My eyes remained closed as I tugged at the hair tie caught within my mass mess of locks. Running my fingers through the knots plaguing my sleep-deranged hair, I managed to remove the majority. When the pain ceased, my eyes flourished to a renewed appearance.

Tethering my hair into a low-key braid, I left my bangs shadowing one eye. I ditched the thought of reapplying makeup and left my natural complexion unchanged.

Unhooking a light jacket from the coat rack by the backdoor, I slipped the torn picture away where I was sure it wouldn't be lost. Beginning my journey on foot, Tom would be somewhere in the neighborhood. Bill had kept the keys to the car leaving his twin to slam the door with burning rage. Only his feet would take him the distance traveled.

Temperatures sunk to an all-time low for the season. Light winds cut through the fabric of the cloth covering what would've been my bare skin. I shivered with the lapping of the cool breeze though I pushed through the thought of quitting before beginning the search to hunt the grounds of where a pop star might hide.

Without a skip in my step, I scanned the streets. I had forgotten a flashlight to quicken the search. The moon was the only source of light in this mid-night quest.

Time was limitless in nature as I didn't keep track. Though I knew there was a true reason for being out late tonight, the stars distracted me. In an array of patterns decorating the sky, they set the sky alight. A reason I preferred the outer edge of towns, the distraction isn't all the new gadgets that hypnotize the brain, but nature, a gift earth gives that to many take for granted and sometimes not even that. Those who don't care just toss around earth as if it's nothing. That if it is ruined, we can just find another planet to live on.

As I wondered, not paying attention to my surroundings, I found myself in my favored spot within the spacious neighborhood, an old park in which all equipment was crafted from wood. Run down and withered, most families avoided this lot. With grass over grown and vines crawling up the post, I could understand why. Yet that's why it became a dwelling place for me; reserved with the connection between nature and I.
