Ch 12

July 2, 2010

"The table still needs to be set!" mum exclaimed from another room.

"I'll get there," I replied coolly while adding finishing touches to my outfit. Taking the steps at a brisk pace, I tried not to fall over my own feet, which were wearing short heels.

As I approached the kitchen, I switched on the light at the entrance of the doorway.

"Tada!" Adileigh yelled as a greeting.

My eyes scanned the room. Nothing aligned the table. The stove, positively, was turned off, yet smells of homemade food drifted in tangled scents among the air. I knew mum had been cooking, baking and cleaning all day as I had help prepare some of the dishes. Yet the island had been cleared of any miscellaneous items. And I could've sworn earlier the island is where all the food had been placed before I had left to change into my outfit for tonight.

"What are you saying 'Tada' about? And where is all the food?" I asked agitated. I was in no mood to be in a sour strain on the boys just as we reconstructed a loose relationship with each other.

With her hands placed on my shoulders, I spun to face another direction. The lights to the dining room were flicked on to illuminate the perfect setting for a semi-casual dinner. Family styled bowls and platters of food stretched the length of the dining room table. Just the aroma of meal invited me to take a seat.

"Thanks," I said without turning back around.

Footsteps echoed through the hallway, finding their way down the stairs. "Oh, it looks beautiful," mum complimented us both.

"It was all Adileigh," I put in.

"I was already here and you needed help, so-" The doorbell interrupted the thought.

All in step, we reached the door together. Turning the knob, I possessed a breath before fully opening the door. "Hey," I welcomed them.

"Hi," the group replied.

I knew, for certain, more people had shown than anticipated, for Bill and Tom stood in the sight of the doorway, yet more than two voices echoed in the exchange. "Surprise," they said with much more enthusiasm than I expected. Stepping aside, realization dawned that the whole band had decided to show. I hadn't even had the knowledge that Georg and Gustav were still in the United States.

"Sorry for intruding," Georg apologized.

"No, it fine," mum cut in, "There's plenty of food. Don't worry."

"You said family dinner," Tom replied, "They're technically family."

I sighed heavily to myself, just as a squeal left Adileigh's lips. I pasted on a smile and hid my displeasure of the extra guests. For once I thought something would go as planned, but I guess Tom proved a point.

Taking the lead, I walked into the dining room. Food still steamed with freshness and warmth. Six plates framed the table with chairs behind each. Mentally counting, we were one short. Allowing everyone to take a seat, I rushed into the kitchen to grab a seat and an extra plate for me.

A conversation had already developed within in the minute I disappeared. Smiles shined on the groups' faces as I took my seat. Words bundled in deep discussion were tossed around the room. Social as ever, actually, I was surprised by the willingness of the boys to talk with Adileigh. Every little fact or detail about them she knew, as if ever on the topic of music, those would be the only words falling from her mouth.
