I never thought I'd be this scared when this moment finally comes.
I've been dreading to meet Luke's mother but unfortunately, I couldn't run away for long.
I have changed my outfit five times and looked at my reflection on the mirror a hundred times.
I need to make the best impression because well, first impressions last.
"Are you ready? "
I roll my eyes and he kisses my cheek.
"You know I'm scared "
I admit, biting my lip.

And the doorbell rings and my heart simultaneously goes to my big toe.
He comes back with a petite lady in a red bodycon dress, black wedges and black, silky hair.
She looks at me, more like scans me up and down and I realise I'm meeting Cindi.
"Mom, this is my girlfriend Cindi and baby, this is Beth, my mom"
She comes to give me a handshake.
"I'm sorry honey, I didn't think she's this old"
She says and from that statement, I know she doesn't like me.
"Mom, be nice"
She rolls her beautiful blue eyes.
"Get me some wine so I can get to know your trophy girlfriend "
OK, Now I'm insulted but I refuse to bite.
I'm keeping my cool for the sake of my boyfriend but I'm close to losing it.
I've had awkward moments before but this is by far the worst.
I've had to sit here and listen to this woman throw insults at me.
I don't deserve this but I'm keeping quiet because of Luke.
I don't want to lose my cool. It's his mom and I can't be the one to get between them.
"What do you do for a living? "
She asks, and I look at Luke who stares at his food.
"I don't work"
Then, she claps her hands.
"You sit here and just eat my son's money? "
"Mother please "
I smile inside when he interjects. It almost feels like I'm all alone but I'm glad he comes through for me.
"This is my girlfriend, my future wife and the soon-to-be mother of my kids. I didn't bring you here to insult her. You have to respect her. "
He looks at me and I smile.
"I'm just saying you can do better "
"And it's not for you to decide. I'm not a kid. I'm capable of making my own decisions and I know what's good for me. Now, if you don't have anything nice to say, just focus on your food"
I swear at this point I'm dancing internally.
I so want to throw myself in his arms and kiss the daylights out of him.
He stood up for me, which makes him my hero.
From there, she keeps quiet until we finish our food.
I clear the table and come with dessert, which she refuses.
"I'm leaving "
She says, looking at Luke.
"So soon? "
He asks and I can discern emotional blackmail coming.
"Clearly I'm not welcome here. "
"No mom. You just don't want to be corrected when you're wrong. I didn't even ask you to apologise "
"I get the point Luke. You love her"
"I do"
He says, looking at me and I blush.
"I'm sorry Cindi"
I nod.
"It's OK "
The truth is however that I'm glad she's been put in her place.

I say to Alexis who's suddenly decided to grace us with her presence.
She giggles before taking Thando from me.
"Hey babe"
I roll my eyes, making her chuckle.
"I'm complaining. "
I say, folding my arms.
"I'm sorry. I really am"
"I should have just moved in with Siya"
I say but I'm just teasing her.
I want to do things right this time, no rush.
"I'm sorry I'm never here but you know I have work and Romeo"
She says, blushing.

She asks, trying to act lost.

She's managed to calm Thando down.
I laugh.

She shrugs.

Later during the day, we decide to watch a movie.
She's made some snacks while my son is sleeping.
I hate that I'm breastfeeding now because I would have been drinking some wine.

She says and I'm so glad I let her in.
I can't wait to lose the baby fat though and get back to my old body.
I miss it but my son was worth it.
