AMELIE'S FIRST CLASS OF THE DAY was French, which she happened to share with Freya and she'd spent the entire night thinking about it.

She, Maye and Juliet had been eating in the dining hall when Raina arrived. As usual, the hall was full with students seated around tables, clothed in dark red and blue, delivering early morning gossip. The three of them sat alone around paper cups of steaming tea and coffee and slices of toast and jam.

Maye was rechecking some summer assignment she'd had for first-period Business Class. Amelie looked on and rolled her eyes knowing full well Mayella had perfected that project within the first week it'd been given.

As for Juliet, she was not her usual morning gossiping self. Typically, Amelie would witness her spark up a conversation with whoever sat nearby to them about the latest rumour mill activity but she was silent, staring into her tea. Part of Amelie sought to inquire, but the part of her that was also keeping secrets shut her mouth.

"Do you have Horseface for first period?" Mayella poked Juliet in the shoulder. She sat up straight, the neat press of her Arrowsmith jacket following her movements.

Her face morphed into a smile and she loosed an exaggerated relieved breath. "No. Bless whoever wrote the schedules this year."

"They should have extended recess to, I dunno, seven hours while they were at it," added Amelie.

"Seven hours of recess?" Mayella piped, with a sharp grin. "To hear you talk incessantly for seven hours? No thanks."

Amelie rolled her eyes and shot back, "You like hearing me talk, Maye. Admit it. If I didn't talk, who would you have to complain about?"

A new voice entered the conversation, "Me, duh."

They all turned. Raina leaned against the back of Mayella's chair, already in uniform, her dark hair in a messy bun atop her head. Her brown eyes, long-lashed and lined in black eyeliner at the top in a short cat eye, sparked with joy at seeing them.

The squealing reignited from yesterday and Juliet was up on her feet, engulfing small Raina into a hug. Amelie too stood, feeling bad for ignoring her the most. Eyes in the cafeteria immediately sparked to their group and usually Amelie was keen on ignoring onlookers but her attention caught on a familiar pair of eyes. Julian Glasier sat near the entrance to the dining hall among his other friends, all heirs to hefty bank accounts, indeed. His eyes met Amelie's for a moment and a trickle of fear sped down her spine. Did he know? He and Karsyn were close, after all. Did he tell Freya?

He looked away seconds later to frown at his phone.

When it was Amelie's turn to hug Raina, he was walking out of the hall, phone at his ear.

They pulled apart and Amelie was made to stare down at her friend. "Hey," she smiled meekly.

In a way, Raina could be a bit of a bulldozer just like Mayella when it came to things. So Amelie wasn't too shocked when her smile dropped and her eyes narrowed, furthering the cat impression. Raina was short but Amelie felt her irritation crash onto her in waves as though she was twice her size.
