Miles POV

"Madeline!" I heard screams around me.

"NO!" someone screamed.

"CALL THE AMBULANCE!" another voice shouted.

All I could do was stand frozen and watch the blood pool out of my sister’s stomach.

"Maddie!" someone shouted.

"Stay with me!" another voice added. "Stay with me, baby! Don’t leave me, come on!"

There was a lot of blood. I watched as it pooled toward me. I watched as it touched the bottom of my shoe.

"Madeline!" a voice screamed.

It was close to me. It made me look up and to my left.

It was Zack. His fingers were tangled in his hair. Tears were streaming down his cheeks.

I looked back down at the blood under my shoe. It was so red. It was so thick. There was so much of it.

Someone wrapped their arms around me. I couldn't feel my body.

"I need you, Milo." someone cried out. "I need you, please. I need you. Please, Milo, please."

Who needed me? I wanted to help them, but I couldn't move. I wasn’t sure if I was even breathing.

The blood just kept coming.

"Come on, Maddie." someone said. "You are not dying! You are not leaving us!"

Dying?

"I NEED A FUCKING AMBULANCE!" a voice shouted.

The blood was now all around my shoe. I was standing in blood.

"Milo." someone said.

Someone lifted my head gently.

I saw my brother’s face. He looked like he was going to pass out. Was he crying? He looked like his whole world had just been taken from him.

"Come back, Milo." my brother said, sobbing quietly. "I need you. She needs you."

She?

I tried to look back down at the blood, but Max wouldn't let me.

"Maddie needs you, Milo." Max cried out. "I need you."

Maddie needed me?

I blinked, and it all came rushing back.

I felt the cold air on my face.

I could smell the blood around me.

I could hear people shouting and screaming all around me.

Maddie.

Oh, God, Maddie.

I looked down and screamed.

Maddie was lying in a pool of her own blood.

There was a gunshot wound in her stomach.

She was pale. Her eyes were closed. I wasn’t sure if she was breathing.

"Maddie!" I screamed, trying to get down on my knees.

I had to go to her. I had to beg her to open her eyes.

Max grabbed me and pulled me into his arms. He was shaking and sobbing.

"No, Max!" I screamed. "Let me go to her. I have to go to her!"

She wasn’t waking up! Why wasn’t she waking up?!

"We need to let Sam work, Milo." Max said through his sobs. "He will help her."
