They both were set on fire and turned into ash in an instant by a Naruto Clone who was watching them from a tree from far away behind the house.
Then he looked up to the sky bored as if nothing happened.

With Tazuna, Kakashi and Team 7, they were on the bridge but what shocked them, minus Naruto was the construction workers near the end of the bridge knocked out.
Tazuna:No! How can this happen?
Then mist started to form around the bridge.
Kakashi:Zabuza. He's here. Everyone, get ready.
He and his team circled around Tazuna with kunai ready. Then they heard Zabuza's voice.
Zabuza:Sorry to keep you waiting Kakashi. And I see that you are still carrying those brats around. Hmph. Even the black haired one is shaking. How pitiful.
