I closed my eyes as I listened to the sound of the waves crashing to the shore. The seagulls were flying all around trying to find their next meal. I took a deep breath of the warm sea air before opening my eyes again. The sun was just above the horizon, it looked beautiful. I put my folded arms over my knees and watched the sun finish coming up. “I thought I’d find you here.” I looked over to see Danny as he sat down next to me. “Pretty early to be up for you.” I looked back to the sun rise.

“I couldn’t sleep so I came for a run, trying to clear my head.” It’s been crazy since I came back from Texas. My mother is furious. She’s been threatening everyone. It’s mind-numbing. I just want everything to go back to normal. It’s too much.

“I know, Hon. You are in a crazy situation and I wish I could make it better.” I leaned my head on his shoulder. “But I can’t. The next couple months are going to be hell for all of us. But we have each other to lean on, she has no one.” I nodded.

“I know. I just, it’s so hard. I feel like I’m being torn in two. She’s my blood. She raised me. But, you, you’re my family. You love me.” I took a deep breath. “It’s something I’ve never had to do. I never had to choose.” Danny rubbed my back trying to comfort me.

“This is the situation that makes boys into men, girls into women. The storm is raging, Ana. We need to fight through it; we need to survive it now. We can’t let the boat sink now, when we are so close to winning.”

“What happens if we don’t win, Dad?” I looked back out at the sea. The skies a beautiful blue, not a cloud in sight.

“We keep fighting till we do. Failure is not an option, not in this case.” He kissed my head. “And anyway we have Mr. Sanders on our side. We can’t lose.” I shook my head.

“But what if we do? What do we do then?” I watched a seagull dip down into the water going under the surface.

“We can’t worry about that, Ana. We have a storm we have to bare our teeth to and get through. We have a treacherous fight ahead of us. Right now we need to make sure we’re ready to survive, before we put up that white flag.” I looked up at him, studying his tense jaw. “How are you and Finn doing?” I shrugged.

“Everything has been a little tense since I got back from Texas. We haven’t been able to spend too much time together with everything going on and him working.” Danny raised an eyebrow.

“Did something happen between you two?” I shook my head.

“Not really. We just had a little disagreement before I left. Nothing I can’t handle.” Danny kissed my head.

“Okay, Kid. I’m here for you if you need me. I’m going to get going home. Don’t stay too long, we’re moving back into the house later.” I nodded barely listening as I zooned out. I don’t know what is happened, I don’t know what is going to happen. I’m walking in the unknown now. I’m in the dark now, with no light to guide me through. Even when I was younger, I always knew what was going to happen. My mother took me, and then beat me. It didn’t change. But now, I don’t know. I just don’t know what is going to happen. It scares me. The unknown scares me more than anything. I don’t know what my future holds, and that scares me the most.
