Barry was waiting for Mackenzie when she came home at half past two in the morning.

"Where were you?" He asked sternly as she dropped her coat onto the floor.

"I went somewhere. To think" She replied, sighing.

"Helpful" Barry rolled his eyes. "Mackenzie. Explanation. Now" He demanded

"Sit then, Mr Demanding" Mack frowned as she sat on their coffee table. Barry sat opposite her on the couch and stared at her expectantly.

"You know how my brother died when I was eight?" Mackenzie huffed, arching an eyebrow.

"Yeah... Mack-" Barry tried but Mack interrupted him.

"He didn't just die, he was murdered. Here, in Central City. I was visiting that spot. It reminds me of what death does to people Barry. My brother's death sent me into this crazy spiral. I didn't get recruited into the army like Wells told you. I did everything in my power to figure out anything about my brother's killer... which included hacking the Australian government. I was barely 18 when I got caught, so instead of throwing me in jail, I made a deal: I would work for them and they would keep quiet. At first it was just computer stuff: hacking, programming. But then they learned I could fight. We... we were forced to be effective murders. And I hate it, I do, but I was damn good at my job. I did a lot of bad things Barry, and I finally broke. I had to get out. The Australian government thought I was dead after I created the Melbourne catastrophe. Quite honestly, I should've been dead, I deserve that much. It's been a long time coming, almost like karma. Barry, I know what death does to people, and I really don't want you to be weighed down by this. I don't want you to do something reckless and crazy just because you're upset. This world still needs you Barry, these people, this town, you have a job to do for them. I guess what I'm trying to say is... I-I need you to be okay with what's happening right now. Do you understand that?" She asked carefully

Silence.

Mack frowned.

"What the hell Mack?" Barry mumbled, staring right at her. "Who are you?"

"Barry I'm sorry to put you in this position, but I have to know that you'll be alright. That you'll take care of everybody" Mack said desperately. She couldn't leave him an un-fixable mess.

"What am I suppose to do? I mean... what do you want me to say?!" He stood suddenly

"I don't know. Whatever comes to mind" She shrugged, internally bracing herself for the worst.

"Well what comes to mind is that I'm in love with a serial killer and known criminal! And that somehow... somehow it doesn't really bother me. Is that bad? I hate that you did that... But it isn't all your fault really? Oh my god I'm defending a murderer. What's wrong with me?! Holy shit" Barry was pacing and worrying out loud. His words hurt, but they were true.

"Mackenzie Carter?"

"Yes?" She mumbled, looking at the boy she loved nervously.

"How am I suppose to live without you?"

His voice was quiet. His eyes held tears.

Mackenzie slowly stood in front of the boy. She pulled him closer and gently placed her hands on his cheeks.

"I wish I had all the answers for you Barry, I'm sorry" She sighed, looking the boy into the eyes.
