So here's some backstory for this fact. You see, Hamilton had TWO brothers: the James we all know and Peter Lavien, Alexander's asshole of a half brother (well, James wasn't exactly great either but compared to the Laviens he's pretty alright) he was born from Rachel's marriage with Johann Lavien who was also a complete asshole. Peter took all of Rachel's inheritance and couldn't even remember James' name and simply deserves to have a spatula up his asshole.
And you might be thinking "nice info about Alexander's family but what does this have to do with John?"
Well you see, it turns out Peter actually got in trouble with Henry Laurens for smuggling on at least one occasion, so John may had heard of him.
