He decided to postpone his investigation for a little while longer. "Naturally I have highly dependable and talented people but I control the reins of my organization. Call it doing things my way."
Her face, like her body, was neat. She had a small straight nose and nice curved eyebrows. He caught himself staring and clenched his teeth in anger.
"Okay."
"Okay what?" Matteo annoyed.
"Okay I'll call it doing things your way kung sa tingin mo ito ay makakagaan sa iyong kalooban."
Matteo controlled himself with difficulty. "Tell me, gaano mo na katagal kakilala ang aking kapatid?"
"Ah, dalawang taon na."
"Dalawang taon. You have been going out with my brother for a couple of years at ang iyong pangalan ay ngayon lamang lumabas? Tingin ko ay napakahirap paniwalaan 'yan. Paolo calls our mother every week. He would have talked about you a lot sooner."
"Sinabi ko na dalawang taon ko na siyang kakilala. Matagal na kaming magkaibigan."
Sarah could feel herself slipping into dangerous territory. She knew where he was going.
Thinking about it, she had seen the flow of his suspicious little mind. She could not afford to antagonize him into digging any deeper.
She had to convince him that everything was precisely as it seemed. Getting under his skin was not the right way to set about the task.
She turned to face him and smiled warmly. "Nag-click kami kaagad. Na kay Paolo ang lahat ng mga katangiang hinahanap ko sa isang lalaki. Siya ay mabait, maalalahanin, at mapagpakumbaba. Ang lahat ng kanyang mga tauhan ay humahanga sa kanya at ganoon din ako."
"At paano kayong dalawa nagkakilala?"
He could hear the sincerity in her voice but he could not abandon the suspicion that it was all a little too good to be true. People were never straightforward towards each other when it came to dealing with huge sums of money.
"Nagtrabaho ako sa kanya," Sarah said simply. "Isa ako sa mga tauhan sa kanyang restaurant nang nagbukas ito. Hindi ka pa ba nakakapunta sa Quezon City upang makita si Paolo?"
"Mas madali para sa kapatid ko na pumunta sa Makati upang makita ako, usually for lunch. Although lately we have not met as often as we might have hoped. Pareho kaming masyadong busy."
"Paolo's restaurants are super," Sarah encouraged, eager to elaborate on a safe topic. "Maganda at komportable ang mga lugar, at may napakasarap na pagkaing Pilipino. Medyo simple lang talaga ang menu. Bukod sa specialty naming pancit Malabon, ipinagmamalaki namin ang mga organic at natural na mga sangkap ng mga pagkain naming inihahain sa mga customer na karamihan ay mga suki na. Ito ay kilalang-kilala."
