Tessa Winters

I pulled into a little café. I parked in the empty space in front of the door. I shut the engine off and climbed out pulling the seat forwards and getting Hazel out. We walked in with her little hand wrapped tightly around my fingers it was not busy and the line was not long

"What do you want to eat?" I ask her

"A muffin" she said pointing to a big chocolate muffin "Want to share with me? I can't finish all that" I laugh lightly

"You take half and I'll take the other" I look down at her

"Yes" she says happily

"Aww, you two are so cute. How old's you're sister?" I turn to whoever was talking to me. A lady, probably in her late seventies

"She 5 and she's actually my daughter" her smile dropped

"You look like you're not even in your twenties" people like this piss me off "That's sinful, do you not believe in god?"

"No" I simply say, picking up Hazel "Now mind your own damn business. She's my daughter and I'm not ashamed of it" I snap at her, she looked taken back

"Ruth leave her alone you old hag" I heard a female voice from behind me. I turn and see the waitress looking pissed off at the lady. Ruth turned around and stomped out

"Thank you" I sigh looking at her name tag "Hadley"

"Anytime. She is a bitch, no one around here likes her. She runs the church, but not many people go"

"I can tell" I laugh rolling my eyes playfully

"So, cutie, what would you like?" Hadley asked turning to Hazel

"A muffin" Hazel chirped

"Chocolate. And a black coffee please" I nod to her

"Coming right up" she started making my coffee and I let Hazel sit at a table where I could see her to eat the muffin "Here you go" I hand her a ten-dollar bill

"Oh no, it's on the house. For the lady causing you trouble"

"Oh, it's fine. It happens all the time"

"That's horrible. God, I am sorry. You seem so chill, and your kid is cute. We should hang out sometime" she says leaning on the counter. There was no one in line "I'm guessing you're new to town"

"I wouldn't say I'm knew. Used to live here once upon a time" I laugh looking around the cafe "But this place is new, I remember there being a bookstore here, not a cafe"

"The old lady that owned the bookstore that used to be here, she passed away and gave the store to her son who sold it and then it turned into this cafe. Been here for 4 years now. How long ago did you move away?"

"About five or six years ago"

"Oh wow" she started laughing "Here we are talking, and you know my name, but I don't know yours"

"Oh sorry. Tessa, Tessa Winters" I put my hand out. She grabs it

"Hadley, Hadley Danial" we laugh "This maybe weird, but can I have your number?"

"Are you hitting on me. Way to be bold" I place my hand on my chest and try to look shocked

"Oh, you know it babe" we break out laughing and we swap numbers "I'm actually a senior in high school now, I'm graduating in two months though"

"Well, I'll be there, I graduated a year later then I was supposed to. What are you seventeen?" I ask

"Eighteen, close. And you're like twenty"

"Nineteen actually. Young I know" I shrug

"Mama" I hear Hazel say "We still have to clean the house" I laugh

"Yeah, I know" laughing more I turn to Hadley "I'll see you around then" I nod to her

"Or I can come over and help you clean after my shift. I've got nothing to do after"

"That would be great, when do you get off?"

"Around noonish. Text me your address and I'll just head over when I'm done"

"Cool. Thank you, you are amazing"

"I know, thanks for noticing. But seriously you're welcome"

"Alright. See you later Hadley"

"Mama?" I hear to the left of me as we walk out "Did you make a friend?" She asks

"I think I did Haz" I say buckling her in

"I ate the whole muffin" she says playing with her hands and looking down

"That's ok sweetie, I'm not hungry" I laugh pulling out of the parking spot.

We talk a bit about what we need to clean, well more like I talked about what needed to be cleaned as we headed home. Glad I made a friend and have help with the house. I texted Hadley the address as soon as I got home and started working on the kitchen
