First impression: Why the hell is this a short story?

Cover: Um... Okay, I guess it's alright. I don't feel like it fits the story as far as I've read, but then again, I'm not sure what image would. So I'm just going to say it's nice and be done with it.

Cover rating: ghosts and crazy people pictures? I don't know!

Blurb: You don't have a blurb. You could have one, you know. A really interesting one at that. You just have a sentence which is also the only time in what I read that Johnathan is actually mentioned. You, sir, are lazy. (still not caring if you're not a sir)

Blurb rating: LAZY!

Let's get it on!

Second impression: Seriously, why is this a short story?

Actual review *drum roll please*:

Language/Writing:

This is going to be very short. Your story reads like a book. You have great grammar and punctuation. You have great sentence structure. You have a very good voice. That is all.

Language rating: All hail good grammar and punctuation

Plot: I hate you. I really, really hate you. And not because your writing is very good. No, I actually admire you for that. I hate you because this story drives a little too close to home. In my case, it wasn't dementia, but still something similar and seeing how Johnathan feels guilty for being relieved his wife died is just... ugh! So DAMN REALISTIC! I think Johnathan's a bit of a lazy asshole who took the easy way out, but I can totally see where he's coming from.

You were so good at showing the numbness and conflicting feelings I want to punch him in the face, but not too hard because... I guess because I understand.

So yes, Johnathan's wife has dementia and dies in a stupid house accident because the poor woman didn't know how to open a door and burned alive. That's some tragic shit right there. I mean it gave me goosebumps. And after his wife dies, Johnathan starts seeing her ghost/spirit/ring wraith around the house.

What I didn't get is why a therapist would actually explain that. I mean, seriously, is that like a researched thing? Because it felt totally like bullshit.

Anyway, yes, apparently Johnathan will try to make it up to his wife's ghost, because he didn't realize how much he was counting on her until she died. Such a tragic story. I personally feel he's a little demented too.

Plot rating: Damn ninjas cutting onions

Characters:

Johnathan: I get him, but he's a weak man and I want to punch him in the face. In a sympathetic way, of course. He's up for a worst husband award, btw.

The kids: Are mentioned, but they don't seem to play much of a role yet.

Tom the therapist: I'm not sure if he's legit, crazy, or just humoring Jonathan.

Character rating: real enough

Why I stopped reading: I have a huge waiting list. But I like the story. Again, though. Why the hell is it a short story? It's a damn novel/novella. Do you people around here even know what a short story is?

Grade: Pass. It's a good, emotional read.
