After leaving Avery and Ben to watch Cobalt, Paige joined Adam, Renee and Miles on the roof. She held an arrow ready on her bow and a pistol in a holster at her leg. Renee and Miles both had rifles, and
Adam had his shotgun. Paige had told him before that it wouldn't be accurate if he was shooting at something on the ground. But it was Adam, and of course he didn't listen. Paige wasn't surprised. Jaime
always stuck with a shotgun too, and they were practically brothers.
It was almost 2:00 in the afternoon, and no one had heard from any of the teams that left earlier that morning. Paige was told it usually took a while to get everything done and get back safe, but still it worried her. Still staring at the ground below her, she focused on the conversation. Renee and Miles were having.
"What part of Britain are you from then?" Renee asked him.
"It's GREAT Britain. London." He answered.
"So you lived by Big Ben and sat in red double-deckers?"
   He sighed. "Yeah, sure."
"Big city boy, then, huh? I lived in Idaho ny whole life. In a small town in a small state." She said, before adding, "What about you, Adam? Where you from?" He didn't answer. "Adam-"
"Shut up." He interrupted. Paige stopped pacing along the roof and turned to him. He stood stock-still and was staring off into the distance.
"Hey-" Miles started but Adam cut him off.
"Just listen!" He growled. Paige let her eyes wander and focused on the sounds around her. A bird calling to another one somewhere above them. It was quiet enough now that she could even hear the others breathing. Then there was that sliver of noise in the distance, so quiet it could be carried away in the wind. But it was there, and they all heard it. There was shooting, almost nonstop. Trying to follow the
noise, Paige looked in the direction that Gavin's team had gone in.
"Guys..." She started, but then heard a sound that almost made her heart stop. It was a sound she'd heard before, and hoped she'd never hear again. It was that off-note howling, and it came from the same
direction.
