Chapter 1

The feeling of my soft comforters lying on top of me felt so good and comfy. I stretched my arms and legs and immediately felt the cold sheets. Yawning I sat up and stretched my arms more. God I actually slept great, first time since school actually started.

I walked toward the bathroom and grabbed my pair of clothes for today. I took a hot shower and let my long brown hair air dry to have waves form freely. I stood there looking into the mirror, hoping I looked even the slightest different. Of course there was no change. Wait green eyes, I must be a little sleepy or just plain paranoid. I shook my head to clear my weird mind and applied on cover up and blush, today is going to be sweet! No literally my sweet sixteen, finally.

I checked myself in my mirror once more. My light washed skinny jeans hugged my legs and my pearl pink v-neck top was perfect for today and not to mention the feathers in my hair. Aria Montgomery you know how to dress, pretty little liars of course. I grabbed my white converse and a pair of socks and headed for downstairs. I walked into the living room and started to put my socks on when I was interrupted.

“Happy Birthday!” My heart almost came out of my chest. I looked up and saw my two best friends Addison and Taylor.

“Hi you guys” I smiled at them still shocked or in my case frightened.

“It’s your sweet sixteen!” Taylor jumped in excitement her pixie haircut in place like always.

“And we got you presents” Addison pushed her blond hair behind her ears revealing purple feather earrings. I squeaked and jumped up from the couch putting my hair behind my ears. Taylor took them out of Addison’s ears and put them on mine and they definitely knew I loved these when I saw them at the mall a month ago.

“We knew you would love them”

“They match your black and gray ones” They were smiling and I knew they were right.

“Thank you thank you!” I walked to the powder room and looked over the earrings. The ones in my hair did go with my new earrings. I loved it, my friends are so great.

“Wait presents?” I turned away from the mirror and walked back to the living room.

“Well not us” Taylor squeaked, while Addison smacked her arm glaring at her.

“What’s going on?”

“Hanna” I smiled and turned around seeing my mom holding a small red velvet box. Without another word I tried to take the box out of my mom’s outstretched hand but she pulled back.

“Not till tonight when only family is here”

“Ahh come on Mrs. Sanders” My friends said at the same time and I gave her my puppy dog eyes.

“Hanna that is not going to work with me, later” My mom turned around and started her way back upstairs. She turned around and smiled.

“Happy sweet sixteen Hanna” I saw the smile go away the moment she thought I wasn’t looking, she looked sad almost. Oh well, I shrugged my shoulders and finished putting my shoes on.

School was a drag besides the fact everyone was saying happy birthday to me and of course I would smile saying thanks. By sixth period I just wanted to go home and open that present from my mom, but just a few more minutes till the bell will ring. I was thinking about nothing, literally my mind was blank when I saw someone waving their hand in my face.

“Earth to Hanna” I blinked a few times to finally see who it was.

“What Taylor” I asked annoyed.

“One more minute and then we are free for spring break!” I took in a deep breath and smiled. How could I forget? The bell rang and I grabbed my bag. Waiting in the hall with Taylor for Addison, we saw her running toward us.

“Hi!” She was out of breath.

“Why were you running” Taylor asked amused.

“It is Hanna’s birthday and we need to get her home, duh” I rolled my eyes, typical Addison running for no reason at all.

We drove on our way home with the music blasting Thomas Square are you gonna kiss me or not. Pulling up to my house I jumped out of the car.

“Happy birthday Hanna!”

“Tell us everything!” I smiled and went into the house.

“I’m home” I walked into the kitchen setting my bag on the table and almost gagged.

“What is that awful smell” I plugged my nose while my mother laughed. She pointed at the floor next to me.

“Gross why does he leave his shoes in the kitchen. Let alone off his feet” My mom smiled while pulling something out of the oven.

“That’s your brother for you” I smiled and picked up his shoes trying not to touch them a whole lot, throwing them out of the kitchen I heard a thump.

“Watch it” I laughed seeing my brother irritated.

“God Sean keep those shoes out of here” He glared and stuck his tongue at me and headed upstairs. Wow and he is a year older than me. What went wrong there?

Taking a deep breath of the febreze my mom just sprayed and went into the living room.

“Oh Hi” I couldn’t believe my eyes my grandma was here and all my cousins, well the girls are here anyway.

“Um were everyone else” I asked trying to smile even though I wasn’t a big fan of my cousins.

“This is a girl matter” She paused and kept talking.

“That my dear is to give you this” My grandma held out the red velvet box from earlier. I turned around to see my mom come in with a tray of drinks for everyone and my favorite chocolate cake. I licked my lips and my mom lifted her chin towards the box to take it. I smiled and rubbed my hands together and took the box and opened it not really taking my time to do so.

“It’s beautiful” I whispered. What lay in the red velvet box was not a set of car keys liked I hoped, but a necklace with a pearl chain, a gold bed for a single ruby. It was more than I could ask for.

“This my dear has been passed down to each generation” I nodded still mesmerized.

“You have been chosen” She took me out of whatever I was thinking.

“Huh?” My mom patted the seat next to her and I went over to go sit by her still holding the necklace in my hand.

“We have been hiding something from you. We all have” I looked around the room and they all nodded and so did grams.

“What are you saying” I asked questionably.

“We and you are…” She paused looking at me straight in the eye. Mom looked worried, just like this morning.

“Witches” Okay…I had to be hearing things.

“Witches” I said below a whisper and grams nodded and so did everyone else.

“This is why we are here to tell you about what you were made to do” Grams said nodding toward my mother.

“And why you must leave” I looked at my mother, who had tears in her eyes, but I could see she was being strong for all of us.

“What am I made to do” I asked still looking at my mother not wanting anyone to answer but her, she had to explain why after all these years. Why now.
