Scarlette's POV

I was astounded by their stupidity.

It was the morning after our encounter with the Wicked Bitch of the West (Ari's delightful nickname for Suki), and I myself was still seething.

The night before, I'd managed to coax the thought of her from my mind while I sat with Gaara atop the roof of our hotel. We hadn't talked much, but it had been a comfort, nonetheless.

And now? Now I thrust back into the complicated, agonizing world of the Hayes sisters.

I woke to an empty room, the sunlight only managing to slit through the drawn shutters. It fell upon my closed eyes and bothered me to the point where I was forced from my slumber. I sat up and looked around, curious as to why I hadn't immediately been mobbed by my sisters, as per usual.

It soon became obvious that I was in for a troubling time.

Ari and Violet's beds were a mess; covers were bunched and wrinkled, pillows were tossed to the ground (courtesy of Ari's restless leg syndrome. Though how she dislodged her pillows with her legs remained a mystery to me) and the sheets were pulled halfway off the mattresses.

It seemed I was the only one capable of sleeping without rearranging the entirety of my bed.

That wasn't the troubling bit though. What bothered me the moment I set eyes on the beds was the fact that Ari and Vi always woke me in the morning. Without fail. It was better than any alarm.

But not this morning.

I slid from my bed and quickly dressed in my typical attire. As I pulled my hair up, I walked to the window and peered outside.

I froze.

Konoha's streets were bustling. People scurried to and fro, children played an laughed. This was not early morning traffic. No it was close to midday at the earliest.

"Shit," I hissed, dragging my hand down my face. This was more than just a little ridiculous of them.

Oh yes. I knew exactly where my sisters had run off to. If they felt the need to hide it from me, it could only be one place.

They'd infiltrated the Forest of Death. During the second Exam. While Orochimaru was there.

Lovely.

As I dashed from our hotel room, I prayed they wouldn't witness Gaara's heartless killing of the Rain Ninja. Despite knowing we shouldn't get involved, I felt certain they'd try to intervene and keep Gaara from slaughtering the poor, unfortunate souls.

And that could get them killed.

I ran through the Leaf's streets, dodging helpless pedestrians and angered old men who cussed and shouted after me when I nearly tripped over their hunched forms.

I ignored all of this, focusing solely on reaching the infamous training grounds that were the Forest of Death.

The test was already well under way, of that I was sure. This was the first day of five the Genin were meant to spend in the dreaded forest, and I strained to remember all that happened this day.

I obtained directions from the oddest of people: Kakashi Hatake, Copy Cat Ninja.

I bumped into him (again) and he instantly recognized me.

"Scarlette, right?" he asked, giving me a closed eye smile. I nodded tightly. I was in even more of a rush than the last time we met. I was tempted to ask him to help me, but thought better of it. There was no guarantee he wouldn't reprimand my sisters and I preferred that I got them out of the forest without them having attracted any attention to themselves.

"Hai," I said, startling myself somewhat. I wasn't accustomed to speaking like that. I hadn't even said baka once since coming here. But I brushed it off and looked up at Kakashi. "Pleasure to see you again, Mr. Hatake."

He chuckled and (for some unknown reason) ruffled my hair. I said nothing about it. "You can call me Kakashi,"he said, clearly amused. "Now, you look like you're in a hurry again. Lose another sister?"

I offered him a tight lipped smile as a response, and he shook his head, guessing at my answer instantly. "There's no cause for alarm," I falsely assured him, my face the picture of innocence. "But I've come to believe that they may have gone to wish our friends luck in the Exams. This recent one takes place in the Forest of Death, correct?" I was worried this seemed out of line, and that he would react poorly. Possibly even bring me to the Hokage for interrogation.

But he only smiled (beneath his mask) and nodded. "That's right. Do you need someone to show you where it is?" he asked politely.

I narrowed my eyes. Why was he being so agreeable? Wasn't he at all suspicious of my wanting to visit the site of the Exams when I myself wasn't in them? Kakashi was no fool; he wouldn't do something without good reason. Perhaps he wanted to keep an eye on me...

"Would it be a bother to ask?" I eventually found my voice and blinked open my eyes fully, noticing the way he studied my reactions to all he chose to say. He was watching me, looking for any hint of deceit.

"It's no problem at all," he replied easily. He waved a hand, beckoning me to follow. I did so, making certain that my pace matched with his. For a while, we walked in silence. It made me even more apprehensive than I already was. People stared at me openly, uncaring as to whether I became annoyed or not. My Suna headband marked me as different, and I knew very well how little the ordinary Konoha citizens tolerated anything differing from their normal lives.

Then there was the fact that I was being escorted around the Village by a high-ranking former ANBU. I probably looked like I'd been caught in the wrong, and was waiting to receive punishment. So I chose to lift my head and keep my eyes focused on what lay ahead, my shoulders pressed back and spine straight.

"How do you like the Leaf so far?" Kakashi asked unexpectedly. I turned to him curiously, disliking the fact that I had to crane my neck to meet his eyes. Seeing he was just trying to make conversation, I allowed myself a small smile.

"My sisters and I are very much infatuated with this Village," I said truthfully. "It's quite different from Suna, and the other Ninja we've met are friendly and kind." For the most part. Sasuke Uchiha was another story, along with Sakura. Not to mention Suki.

Kakashi chuckled. "Guy told me about your one sister, Violet," he said and my face fell at the memory of those two together. The Copy Cat Nin didn't seem to notice. "He said she was really youthful, and that she and Lee got along well."

"Yes," I said shortly. I felt my hands clench into fists as the annoyance of that time washed over me again, and I hid them behind my back. "Violet and Lee are... good friends. Though she tends to go overboard with those she likes. I hope Guy Sensei didn't mention anything negative about her."

"Not at all," he said breezily. "He's pretty.... eccentric himself, so he doesn't have much room to talk." He paused a moment, then said, "Oh, we're here."

I looked up, slightly baffled, and saw the high metal fence surrounding the eerie forest. Warning and Danger signs were plastered to the fence, and an uncomfortable feeling settled in the pit of my stomach. Another part of the Exams I had hoped to avoid.

"So," Kakashi said, making me blink. Oh. I hadn't thought of a way to get around him, and search for Ari and Vi. That wasn't particularly good. "Do you want to tell me the real reason you came here?"

I stiffened, my eyes quickly dropping to gaze at the ground. I saw no point in lying any further. If he already knew, I would only be digging another foot of my own grave.

"An incident occurred yesterday," I said carefully. He didn't reply, so I forged ahead. "It wasn't anything big, but it greatly upset the three of us." I bit my lip, unsure how he'd react if I brought up Suki.

"Suki can be quite the handful, can't she?"

What?

He sighed, leaning his weight to one foot, both hands now deep in his pockets. "She told me yesterday that you three harassed her." I opened my mouth to object, but he silenced me with a calming look. "That's not the truth and I know it. So don't worry, I'm not going to kill you or anything."

"How very reassuring," I muttered dryly. He only chuckled again.

"Anyway, I know Suki can rub people the wrong way, especially other girls such as yourself. I won't ask what happened, but I do want to know what this forest has to do with it."

I rubbed my temple, annoyed that she-demon had whined about us to her Sensei. How immature. She should fight her own battles. I wouldn't want to ask Temari, or Kankuro, or Gaara to fight for me unnecessarily.

"My sisters..." I started slowly. "I think they mean to get back at Suki. Not only for what happened yesterday, but for the turmoil she's causing throughout the Genin of your Village."

"Righ, the uh, Love Heptagon,"

I smiled slightly, surprised we weren't the only ones who referred to it as such. "Yes, that. I know it seems odd we'd be informed about that, but Kiba Inuzuka, Ari's friend, is a part of it, and we pieced things together. But the point is, my sisters don't like the way she treats the Ninja here, and would like to teach her a lesson. If I'm right, which is, sadly, very likely, they've gone after her in the Forest of Death."

Kakashi looked up at the dark, towering trees thoughtfully. His eye narrowed, head tilting to the side. "You want me to let you go in there?" he asked skeptically. "Alone?"

I crossed my arms under my chest, following his gaze. A giant centipede the size of a city bus crawled into view, scuttling up the side of an ancient-looking tree. I cocked my head to the side, wondering if Naruto had been eaten yet. "I am not as fragile and unskilled as I look," I assured him.

"I don't find that surprising," he replied, giving me another closed eye smile. After a moment, his expression turned serious and he looked me over. "I'll let you go," he said, and my heart rate quickened at the thought of entering the forest, "on one condition."

"And that would be?" I asked.

"You go in with one of my Summoning Dogs."

I blinked. That wasn't an expected outcome. "Wouldn't that inconvenience you?" I questioned, not wanting to trouble the Jonin anymore than I had. He chuckled again.

"You're too polite for a girl your age, Scarlette," he said, patting my head again. This was becoming a regular occurrence, and I found it wasn't wholly a bad thing. I enjoyed being on good terms with Kakahi Hatake.

"That's quite funny," I responded, a surprising smile gracing my lips. "As a child, I was always told you could never be too polite. It seems I was the only sister who took that to heart." Kakashi looked at me for a moment more, before he too offered a smile. But I could see how analytical he was. He was wondering what type of upbringing I'd had.

Ari, Vi and I had sworn to keep our real pasts a secret. And because the Sand Siblings had secrets of their own (Shukaku being the primary one) they never pried. But Kakashi.... I wasn't sure he would leave it alone if he thought it was harmful, to either my sisters and I or the Village.

I tried to steer him away from the gap in the conversation I'd opened up. "Care to show me what type of Summoning Dog you've got up your sleeve?" I asked, feigning interest. In truth, I adored Kakashi's Pack, but I had already guessed he'd choose Pakkun. He always chose Pakkun.

"Sure," he said, reaching into his weapons pouch for a scroll. He unrolled it over the ground, crouched down and bit his thumb. He swiped the digit over the length of scroll, trailing blood, where a careful Summoning Jutsu had been prepared and written out.

"Summong Jutsu!"

Ari's POV

The Forest of Death wasn't anything like it was in the anime.

For one thing, it wasn't that scary. Sure, it was dark, and we were alone, but the "monsters" I'd been promised? They went down like flies after having undergone nuclear radiation testing. (Don't mock me, I saw it on Mythbusters! Those buggers went down fast!)

After a taste of my Sand Hurricane (patent pending) the fight was over. Vi was disappointed too; she wanted to test out her jutsu on real opponents, not those idiotic straw dummies.

"Sand Hurricane!"

My foot slammed into the head of a giant centipede, knocking it right off its tree. I'd crushed its exoskeleton, or whatever, and once it hit the ground, it didn't resurface. I wiped the bug goo off my sandal and continued walking with Vi as if I hadn't just killed a bug the size of a super stretch limousine.

"This is boring!" Vi complained, walking hunched over like she couldn't support her own weight (98 pounds, to be exact). "Where's Suki?! All we've found so far are a bunch of scummy Grass Village Ninja. And they weren't even with Orochimaru!"

"Wait, you want to run into the Pedo Snake?" I asked, cringing just at the thought. Ugh. His tongue had to be the most disgusting thing I'd ever seen in my life. So, so, so many wrong things he could do. None of them legal.

"Hm?" She looked at me quizzically. "Of course not! But isn't that where we'd find Suki? She's supposed to be with Sasuke and Naruto."

"Don't forget the whiny little pinkette," I muttered. Alright, I admit Sakura definitely gets better as the series goes on, but right now? My God, she was useless. Just stood there and screamed for Naruto and Sasuke to save her. Course there's this moment where she protects them from the Sound Ninja, but she couldn't even take down Kin! Kin! For the love of Kami, she was clearly the weak link in that trio. Well, to be honest, only Dosu was really any good, in my opinion.

"Right," Vi said, nodding. She didn't dislike Sakura as much as I did, but I think it was because she liked her hair color. My sister really liked pink. Hence her outfit.

"What you said is true, anyway," I said, linking my hands behind my head. I sighed. "I guess we better start looking for Orochimaru..... Hey, I just thought of something." I blanched, and Vi gave me a worried look. She waved her hand in front of my face but I refused to turn my head. Dear God, what had we gotten ourselves into?

"What is it, Ari?"

"I know something that's scarier than even getting caught by the Pedo Snake."

"....Uh, what's that?"

"An angry Scarlette."

We both gulped, looking around us uncomfortably. Scar was one that didn't give into anger easily, as previoulsy stated. But it was like a volcano going off when she did! Fire raining from the sky and what not.

"How much do you wanna bet she found out already?" I asked, shifting on my feet in a nervous habit. Vi looked up at me from beneath her bangs, thick lashes fluttering worriedly. "We should probably hurry," was all she said.

I nodded and we took to the trees, hurrying our pace. How anyone was supposed to find anything in this place was beyond me, but we kept at it anyway.

You won't believe where we found Suki.

C'mon, guess!

Was she helping out her teammates?

EHHH!! Wrong answer.

Did she go for help because she knew Orochimaru was too strong right off the bat?

Sorry, try again.

....Nothing? Seriously, I'd have been stumped too. I was in shock for about three whole minutes, jaw hitting the ground, eyes bugging. Completely speechless. Violet was giggling.

We could hear the sounds of fighting further in the forest, the hissing of snakes, the familiar yells of Naruto and his team. All except the silver-haired Kunoichi we'd all come to hate. She was huddled under a bush, bawling her eyes out. She'd used her Kekkei Genkai to sharpen the leaves around her into something that rivaled kunai.

Like that would stop anyone from getting in. Maybe Naruto. He'd be too stupid and just charge the damn thing.

Violet and I were up in the trees above her, just taking in the fact that she'd obviously abandoned her team because she was a freaking coward. Cowardice didn't survive in the Ninja world. It was flushed out and beaten to a bloody pulp. Like I was planning to do just that moment.

"Ready for the plan?" I asked Violet. Her gorgeous reddish-brown eyes lit up and she gave me a wink and a giggle.

If I had any doubts about this being the right thing to do, they were thrown out the proverbial window at seeing Suki like this. It was pathetic. Her teammates would never do something like this to her. They'd stick with her to the end, no matter how tough things got. Now I couldn't say the same for the Sand Siblings with each other, though I pretty much knew they'd drop everything to save one of us. (A/N: That, my dear readers, was a rather pitiful attempt at foreshadowing!) It's what you do when you're on a team. Hell, it's what you do when you're friends with someone!

Violet, who was the absolute best at Ninjutsu, placed her hands together in a sign I'd seen so often on the show. There was a flash of smoke, and then my sister was gone.

She was replaced by a certain man-child I knew Scar was itching to punch.

"Perfect!" I complimented, giving her a thumbs up. I imagined she smiled, because I could hear her giggling, but I couldn't actually see it. Damn mask. She looked exactly like Tobi though. The Akatsuki cloak, the orange swirl-pattern mask, the scruffy brown hair.... Everything. The whole shebang. And she had the voice.

"Tobi is a good boy!" she giggled. Or, he giggled, I guess. Whatever. I waved her off and she leaped from the tree branch we'd perched on, landing just in front of Suki's hideout.

"Suki-chan!" she (Alright, I'm just gonna go with she cause I know it was my sister and not the real Tobi. Too confusing otherwise) called out. "Tobi's come to rescue you!"

The current situation actually made our plan work about ten times better. We'd originally thought to snatch her from the battle with Orochimaru or (depending on when we found her) the Rain Ninja clones. Or possibly the Sound Ninja. It didn't really matter, as long as she was in some sort of peril. But this, this was priceless. It could not have gone any better for us!

"T-Tobi?!" she stuttered, crawling out from under the bush (which she'd had the forethought to return to normal. Damn, it would have been funny to see her get messed up from her own trick!). She looked up at "Tobi" in disbelief, eyes wide with hope.

I chuckled under my breath.

"Suki-chan!" Vi repeated, reaching down to wrap the startled girl in a hug. When she spoke again, I breathed a silent sigh of relief.

"You don't have to worry any more, I'll protect you."

It was a spot on impression of Tobi's "real" voice. His deep, kinda sexy voice, to be exact. The other one kind of made my ears bleed, to be honest.

And look! Personal pronouns!

Suki collapsed against Violet, sobbing. I rolled my eyes at the whole scene. Kami, this girl was one hell of a hot mess.

"I-I want to go with you!" she cried suddenly, like I knew she would. "I'll join the Akatsuki! I don't want to live in Konoha anymore!"

"Good!" Violet chirped, her Tobi facade gone. Suki jumped back in shock, and I bust out laughing, rolling around on the weirdly huge tree branch. "We don't want you here either!"

"Y-you!" Suki whisper-yelled, pointing an accusatory finger at my sister.

"Ah ah ah," I chided as I jumped down beside Violet, who got rid of her disguise with a cheery giggle. "US would be the word you're looking for, Meredith."

"You can't possibly know that!" she screeched. One of my eyes scrunched shut in reaction to her voice; it had gone up about five octaves.

"Sorry, but we do," Vi said brightly.

"And we know ALL about your Kekkei Genkai," I added, wiggling my fingers creepily for added effect. I stuck my tongue out. "That's your only jutsu, right?"

Her silence said it all, in an equally annoying, high-pitched voice that blew Tobi's right out of the water.

"What do you bitches want?" she growled after a minute of us just standing there, smiling a little madly.

"Revenge, justice, a chocolate bar," I listed, counting off on my fingers while I gazed lazily up at the intertwining branches. "Kami, I'd kill for some Hershey's chocolate right now."

"Ooh I know!" Violet chimed in, holding onto my arm enthusiastically. "They're chocolate syrup is the best! So sweet!"

"You two, and that bitchy sister of yours, are from... MY world?!"

"Huh?" I looked up from my chocolate-dominated daydream and cocked a brow. "You just figured that out? I mean, you didn't think it was weird that three random chicks were with the Sand Siblings? That's not really in the story line, you know."

At my uncaring, mocking attitude, Suki decided to get serious.

I watched with a raised eyebrow as her eyes glowed a vibrant, unnatural pink with black markings that looked like flower petals surrounding her dark as shit pupils.

Ok, her Kekkei Genkai made her look pretty badass. I'll cop to that much.

But was I scared?

Pft! Yeah right! The only she could do was turn plants into shuriken or kunai-type weapons. Block or dodge and it's game over for the skanky Wicked Bitch of the West.

I was, however, scared SHITLESS when I heard the sound of someone jumping to the ground behind me and Vi, and a voice.

"You two... I can't believe you would do something as ludicrous as this."

I chanced a look over my shoulder and grimaced. Yup, that was definitely Scar. She was standing next to a big, and I mean HUGE, gray dog that I thought was from Kakashi's pack, but couldn't put a name to.

"Uh, hey, what's up Scar?" I asked as conversationally as I could. Violet smiled and waved, but kept glancing at me in fear.

After a moment of glaring, an energetic smile pulled at Scar's lips. She was looking past us, at Suki. I could tell something about her changed, just seeing the bitch in person again.

"You didn't allow me to finish, Ari," she said. I blinked as her smile turned slightly sadistic. Not that I minded. "I meant I can't believe you'd do something this ludicrous... without me."

I gaped like a dying fish and even Violet seemed a little thrown off.

Scar gave us a closed eye smile. "We're sisters, aren't we?" she asked. "Aren't we meant to share in enjoyable experiences?"

My grin returned in full force, and I spun around to loose it on a shocked as hell Suki.

"You're in for it now, bitch," I told her pleasantly.

She sweat dropped.
