On Thursday, their English teacher announced they had a pair-project they had to work on; preparing for a presentation about Jane Eyre that would be followed by question-and-answer session. The project was to be scored and would, according to Mr Eccles, “be the primary factor in deciding the report grades. I’m taking it as a summary of all you’ve learnt so far, so you’d all better show me your absolute best”.
Later in that lesson Isaac slipped Jared a piece of paper, almost shaking with silent laughter (because of course he found himself fucking hilarious).
‘Be my partner circle yes or no,’ read the paper in a scrawly pink felt tip.
“I even put a heart over the i in ‘circle’,” said Isaac smugly, pointing it out with a horrible self-satisfied smirk on his face.
“You make me feel sick,” Jared told him. He made a half-hearted attempt at a glare that ended in an exasperated grin, and screwed up the note to throw it at Isaac’s face.
