Beyond The Wall

Beric Dandarrion was walking with Davion and Jon. The three had only one thing in common, they all came back from the dead.

"You don't look like him." Beric said to Jon.

"Who's that?" Jon asked.

"Your father." He said. "I suppose you favor your mother."

"You knew him?" Jon asked.

"Course I did." Beric said.

"When he was Hand he sent Lord Beric off hunting for the Mountain." Davion said.

"Indeed." Beric said. "Your wildling friend told me that the Red woman brought you back."

"Aye. Davion was also brought back from the dead." Jon said.

"Is that true?" Beric asked.

"Yes, I was killed in Mereen, defending my friends and I was stabbed multiple times. The next thing I knew I woke up in Volantis and a priestess told me that I died." Davion said. "They also told me to pull out a cursed sword that could help us defeat the Army of the Dead and the Night King."

"Thoros has brought me back six times.' Beric said. "We both serve the same lord."

"I serve the North." Jon said.

"And I serve Daenerys." Davion said.

Beric looked at Jon. "The North didn't raise you from the dead." He then looked at Davion. "Daenerys Targaryen didn't raise you from the dead either."

"The lord of light never spoke to me, and even if he did I wouldn't listen to a god that wants men, women and children to be burnt alive." Davion spat.

"Davion is right, and I don't know what he wants from me either." Jon said.

"He wants the three of us alive." Beric said.

"Why?" Jon asked.

"I don't know." Beric answered.

"That's all anyone can tell me. 'I don't know' ." Jon said.

"This lord of light that you worship so badly only wants us to fight and die for his pleasure, if he truly cared about us, why wouldn't he defeat the Night King himself? Why would he have an entire realm divided. Was he hunting for dinner when the Seven Kingdoms ripped itself apart?" Davion was beyond angry, he had so many questions, but no answers. "Whats the point in serving a god if none of us knows what he wants?"

"I think about it all the time, my prince." Beric said and Davion didn't even care to correct him. "I don't think it's our purpose to understand. Except one thing. We're soldiers. We have to know what we're fighting for. I'm not fighting for so that some man or woman I barely know, can sit in a throne made of swords."

"So what are you fighting for?" Jon asked.

"Life." Beric said. "Death is the enemy. The first enemy and the last."

"But we all die." Davion pointed out.

"The enemy always wins, and we still need to fight him." Beric said. "That's all I know. You, me and Prince Davion won't find much joy whole we're here, but we can fight to keep others alive."

"We defend those who can't defend themselves." Davion smirked..

Jon smirked. "I am the shield that guards the realms of men." He recited the Nights Watch vow.

"Maybe we don't need to understand any more of that." Beric said. "Maybe that's enough."

"Aye." Jon agreed. "Maybe that's enough."
