Make your adoptees work and collect collectibles.

Trick: try and get your adoptee and their spouse to both have a starting 15 salary, and do the praise trick. Spend money on 1000 units of food (trust me, you'll get your money back) Then, fast forward your device just a year into the future, and you'll have probably a couple thousand. Use some of that money to pay for more food, and keep doing this. Soon you'll have this done. While trying to achieve this, do not buy anything but food and medications.
