Chapter 42:

I lay down with my eyes fixated on the white metallic ceiling, carefully retracing my memories.

I must've fainted,
I concluded.

And then,
suddenly,
impulsively,
I shouted:

"THE GIRL!"

The woman beside me jumped a little
in surprise.

"That girl... is she safe?"

I asked in a milder tone.

"What happened to her?"

I made a pause,

afraid to shape the words

I feared most.

"...did she jump again...?"

Chapter 43:

I turned my head sideways, facing the bewildered woman,
in an attempt to catch any sign that would betray a lie.

The woman looked at me as if I were insane.

"There was a girl!

By the lights!

At the crossway!

Did she cross the street alright?

Please tell me that she's safe...

She didn't die, did she?"

An avalanche of questions fell from my mouth

one by one,

quickly, steadily, without a pause.

"No other ambulance was requested, was it?"

Is this guilt you're feeling?
The voice inside my head retorted.
If so... it's pretty late—

"She's safe."

—for such regret.

Chapter 44:

"...please rest up."

The nurse only managed to make this small comment before returning to her other tasks—her eyes fixated anywhere but me.

She's scared of you.

My head began to burn again
and a slight shade of dizziness
took over me again.

Menacing silence fell
inside the ambulance

and I couldn't help but feel betrayed.
