Taps

When I was little, I thought that I knew my place;
A seat by the edge of the table, a permanent smile on my face.
As I got older, I learned that things are a lot more unclear,
I felt like my happiness was a distant memory, as well as everything that I held dear.

My tap was running warm.

When I was sixteen, I was stuck in a place between who I wanted to be and who I was;
My friends thought that they knew me because I was doing "what a geek does."
I was undesirable and ill-equipped;
Yet I was the only one who kept my pants zipped.

My tap was running cold.

When I was in my twenties, I had given up on love and romance;
I had a bunch of dates with people who wouldn't give me a chance.
I found myself tempted to be somewhere new;
Where nobody saw me from under all the dew.

My tap was no longer running...
My tap, was off.
