Only One Pin

A timeline with only one pin
The point when you have to take responsibility
The point when you know it's your fault
The point of no return.

Life stops for a second
Anticipating two outcomes: one happier than the other.
The seconds turn to minutes
A paragraph of words is spoken and the pin is pushed in.

A thought vacation is what you're left with
A seemingly long period of sunny relaxation is a foggy storm of wandering "what ifs"
The regrets set themselves up in the bed next to yours
And you are blanketed in scratchy concern.

What is to happen when the vacation is over?
That lone pin will define my uncertain life.
I can't remove it, that will cause too much pain.
But its security plagues me; things will never be the same.

Pins are easy to find, but hard to stick down.
Not that their presence is always comforting.
But if I don't try, my one pin will rust away.
That's why I have a timeline with two pins today.
