"We know that he's your boyfriend, Nas. We've known that since his graduation party," My mother explained.
"Really?" I asked.
"Honey, friends don't dance as close as you two were, that night," she shook her head.
"Oh," was all I could say.

"Well, what's your answer?" I hesitantly and sweetly asked.
"You're eighteen now, Nasira. . . You'll be off to college soon. You don't necessarily have to answer to me anymore," she smirked.
"So, what you're saying is that I can go?" I raised an eyebrow with a smirk.
"Yes," she smiled while rolling her eyes playfully.

I hugged her before dashing up to my room. I showered and got dressed in a pair of shorts and a cropped t-shirt. I slipped on a pair of Vans and tied a sweater around my waist before pulling my hair into a ponytail.

It was the 4th of July. Usually, I'd go down to the river or something with Miracle and watch other people pop fireworks, but Genesis suggested that we all hang out at his house. He was having a kickback, where everyone would pop fireworks in his backyard and then we'd all just chill for a while.

I rode with Jazz despite Genesis insisting that he pick me up himself. I reasoned that Genesis should be setting up for the kickback, not worrying about me. Besides, Miracle and Jay needed a ride as well, and we were knocking out four birds with one stone.

Once we arrived to his home, we found that all of his other friends were already there and conversing over drinks and trap music.

Genesis greeted my friends as soon as we came in, and took my hand into his once he got to me, lastly.

He pecked my lips sweetly before smirking down at me. I smiled back at him before he glanced over at my friends. "See you guys later," he nodded before leading me toward the kitchen.

Something was different about Genesis tonight. He hadn't necessarily done anything out of the norm, but it was all in his eyes. It was always in his eyes.

"What do you have planned tonight?" I looked at him in suspicion.
"Why do you think I have anything planned?" he chuckled.
"I see it in your eyes, Genesis," I glared at him.
He laughed.
"You wanna' know what I've got planned tonight? Check it. . . We are gonna' eat, listen to music, hang out with our friends, and pop a couple of fireworks. Then we," he motioned toward me and him, "are going to go up to my room so we can talk about something really important."

"We can talk right now, Genesis. If it's important to you then--"
"It can wait, Nasira," he assured me.
"But--"
"It can wait," he repeated with his finger hooking itself into one of the belt loops of my shorts.
"Are you sure?" I asked.
He nodded with a small smile.

"Do we have to go up to your room to talk?" I asked quietly.
"You don't want to go up to my room?" he asked.
"It just seems a little suspicious that we're going to your room just to 'talk,'" I explained.
He chuckled.
"Baby, if all you wanna' do is talk, that's all we'll do. Fair enough?"
I nodded in response.

With that, he pulled me closer by the belt loop and pecked my lips several times. We soon left the kitchen and returned to the rest of the guests. We made our way outside, where Mr. and Mrs. David were finishing up grilling and making plates while Skylar cautiously poured the heavy jug of lemonade into cups for everyone.

Pretty soon, we were popping fireworks and lighting sparklers. It was really fun, and a little frightening because Miracle plays too damn much and kept putting her sparkler near my hair.

"Quit, Mira!" I screeched as she chased me around my boyfriend's backyard while laughing.
After only a few minutes, I sought shelter behind Genesis, who was just throwing away his paper plate, which was filled with barbecue about ten minutes ago.
