"Are you ready?" I asked, my excitement apparent in my voice.
"Yes! Come out already!" Lesane called from the other side of bathroom door.
"Yeah! You're missing the countdown on TV," Ashley added.

I decided to dye and cut my hair, and it was time for the big reveal. I did it as a spontaneous type of thing, and what better time to do it than New Year's Eve?

"10 . . . 9 . . . 8 . . . 7 . . . 6 . . ."

"You got us dying out here, Renée!" Lesane groaned.
"If you come out here with some basic ass blonde, I'm kicking your ass as soon as you pop out that baby. Your ass-whooping will be on layaway," Ashley said, making me giggle.

I had been wearing a beanie all day in attempt to hide the color, and even when Lesane's playful ass snatched it off in attempt to spoil the surprise, I had my bonnet on underneath. Even when Ashley talked me into taking it off, I had a durag on underneath, which I purchased just because I knew they would plot against me. According to them, I kept foiling their plan. But as of ten minutes ago, I had unleashed my new hairdo so that I could prep it for its debut to the world. Besides, after having it under three layers of material, the style needed to be revamped.

"5 . . . 4 . . . 3 . . . 2 . . . 1"

"Ta-da!" I jumped out of the bathroom, my arms wide open as I gave my biggest, cheesiest smile.

"Happy 2000!"

"Happy 2000!"

"Oh. . . shit," were the only words that left Lesane's mouth as Ashley stared at me with wide eyes and a dropped jaw.

"Do y'all like it? I know it's different. . . Really different, but—"

Lesane pulled me close to him and kissed me deeply. It was unlike anything we'd ever done, his tongue pleading for a way between my lips. It wasn't long before I granted him permission, his hands moving from my hips and to my shoulders and to either side of my neck. His thumbs lightly caressed my jawline as I giggled through our kiss.

"Lesane," I attempted to say, but he wasn't letting up on me yet, which made me laugh more.
Slowly but surely, his lips parted from mine and he stared into my eyes for a moment. Butterflies ate away at my stomach as we became lost in each other's eyes.

"I'll take it that you like my hair," I smirked, making him laugh, glancing down a bit as he rubbed the back his neck.
"I just wanted to be your New Year's kiss, but yes. . . I like your hair. You look like a chocolate strawberry swirl. . . like the ice cream. . . Never mind," he shook his head and chuckled a little.
"Thanks, L," I smiled and kissed his cheek before turning toward Ashley.

"So. . . what do you think?" I asked her.
"I love it so much that I'm about to vomit rainbows. That's how much I love it," she instantly began grinning.
"Really?" I asked, laughing a little at her hyperbole.
"Yes! Bitch, I wish I could pull off pink! This is crazy! It's like cotton candy— No, it's like strawberry flavored sweets— No, it's like. . . that pink that's in the sky when the sun is setting," she nodded.
Lesane nodded in approval of her comparison.
