Clara Reid just had to be one of the best therapists money could by. She used to want to brag. I mean, she has two PhD's (one is psychology cause duh, and another in mathematics for the hell of it), she graduated top of her class at Columbia University, and just happened to stumble upon superheroes who needed way too much psychological help. But now, after having one (only one!) session with Tony Stark, Clara was ready to pack up her bags and leave.
Difficult doesn't even begin to describe Stark's personality. Clara is a doctor, she knows she has to be professional, so of course she was, but after her appointment with Stark she needed to take a bit of a breather. And Stark definitely does need the help. He has extremely severe panic attacks, horrible coping mechanisms, and trauma wrapped up with trauma, but he refused any help. The whole forty-five minute session, he talked about everything but the reason Pepper Potts made him attend the session and rolled his eyes more times then she could count.
Usually, people need to want to seek help for Clara to continue working with them, but Ms. Potts wouldn't let Clara take a step back. This led to Dr. Clara Reid to look into some... unusual, methods to get Tony Stark to open up.

— I see Clara as helping Tony with his suits, or whatever (i haven't seen marvel movies recently so I'm not sure what happens next after avengers. das on me). so she goes to his lab and such
— Clara opens up to get Tony to open up
— Clara knows some electrical stuff because her father used to work on stuff (author decides. like I said, I don't have a lot of info for this) so she can help Tony. and her phd in math comes in handy
— and yes her last name does come from spencer reid in criminal minds. they are both extremely smart so I decided why not
