'She told me that she loved me by the water fountain'

This song. It's this song.

'She told me that she loved me, and she didn't love him'

God, how they loved this song. How it fit them so well.

'And that was really lovely because it was innocent'

She remembers roses. Seeing them fall as she did, too. What kind of fall you ask? Both in love and in death.

'But now she's got a cup with something else in it'

They used roses as a metaphor. Roses with their beauty and thorns. Love can neither grow nor die, the rose- your love- will wilt.

'It's getting kind of blurry at a quarter past ten'

Wilting is not dying. Near, but not exact.

'And he was in a hurry to be touching her skin'

But wouldn't wilting be more painful?

'She's feeling kind of dirty when she's dancing with him'

Dying is just dying. Simple. Plain. Nothing more too it.

'Forgetting what she told me by the water fountain.'

Wilting- more complex. Slowly, but surely, falling. Failing to function. Breaking apart. Loosing colour, and petals, and life, and will, and essence.

'Now he's grabbing her hips, and pulling her in'

Definitely more painful. Both to feel and to witness.

'Kissing her lips, and whispering in her ear'

Death is just gone. Lost in the middle of a straight road, no end, no start. Better than multiple paths in her opinion.

'And she knows that she shouldn't be with him'

Wilting is like being lost in a never ending maze. Sure, she's smart- too smart, arguably. Yet, even this maze is too complex. Too many possibilities to narrow it down to. It'd take...maybe thirty years to figure out with root to take first. Just for a first step. She knows the other would just wing it- declare it's better than waiting around for nothing.

'And that she should be with me by the water fountain'

Nothing is more painful than anything. Nothing is, literally, nothing. But, if she was being honest with herself, was there anything there at all?

'I should've built a home with a fountain for us.'

A/N:
The song is The Water Fountain by Alec Benjamin.
