I'm about to take the exit to my hometown when Emily jolts awake all of a sudden in the passenger seat.

"I didn't make the pie."

If I'm honest, I too wake up and think about pie on occasion.

Emily turns to face me in her seat, "I promised to bring a dish. I was going to make a pumpkin pie." She covers her face with her hands.

I shrug, "It's not like we don't have grocery stores in my hometown. We'll go out later tonight to get the stuff to make it. I'm sure my mom has a grocery list waiting for me anyways." I roll my eyes as I think of the list that's always handed to me. My mom hates dealing with last minute shopping and standing in long lines at check out. But she doesn't mind sending me to get the few things she forgets to buy.

Emily relaxes back in her seat. "Yeah, I just hope Jessie and Noah forgive me for leaving them hanging on making theirs too."

As I look over at Emily, I scoff. "Those two need a team-building activity anyways. It'll be good for them to bake their own." While this is true, I still find myself inwardly laughing at the idea of those two baking together.

Emily fidgets with the ends of her long brown hair, almost like she wants to put her blue wig back on. I know she does. She wants to be back in Corpus Christi saving the day and hiding from the press. Rather it's from peril or from failing grades, Emily is always saving people.

When my phone starts to ring in my pocket, I look at the dashboard to see who's calling. What does Karsyn want? I press the answer button and watch Emily sit up in her seat, curiously glancing between me and the screen in the middle of the dash.

"Hey, what's up?" I ask.

"Hey! Your mom's been trying to call you. Are you almost home?" Karsyn asks over the speaker.

"Um... almost." I realize I'm a few hours past when I said I'd be home, but I didn't even think to tell mom. Oops. "Are you at my house too?" I ask Karsyn. Mom must have asked her to call to see if she could get me to answer.

"Yeah, Grayson invited me over."

I laugh aloud, "Is there anyone at my house that actually lives there?"

"Uhh... your mom's here!" She answers in a cheery tone.

"Tell her I'll be home in about five minutes." With that, I hang up.

I know that in most cases it would be weird for Grayson to invite other people over to my house, but we basically grew up together under the same roof. He spent every other weekend at my house throughout middle school and high school. It's safe to say that he can show up at my house unannounced and neither of my parents would have an issue.

However, this situation is almost laughable. Grayson invited Karsyn over to my house, but he won't ask her out? Looks like I'll be playing match-maker this weekend.

Emily clears her throat, which startles me out of my daze. "So... who was that?"

I look over at her, only to see she's put on a blank expression. "That was Karsyn. She's one of my friends from high school." I'm trying to sound nonchalant so that Emily doesn't get the wrong idea, but when Emily's nose scrunches up, I know I've said something wrong.

"An old high school friend is coming to your house for Thanksgiving?"

Oh no. I'm not letting Emily think for one second that Karsyn and I have history or that she takes precedence over Emily this weekend. Even if I've made a promise to put a barrier between us romantically, Emily's still my guest and a good friend. I'm putting an end to any insecurities Emily might have.
