I'm going to tell Emily.

I'd hate to ruin what we have going at the moment. However, is it really authentic if I haven't told her who I am? That's it, I've got to end these mixed emotions. I'm taking Reggie's advice and telling her the truth. The worst that could happen is she takes a bus back to Corpus Christi and never talks to me again.

Yikes.

Even with that awful thought stirring around in my mind, I head back downstairs to give Emily the news.

When I enter the kitchen, she's merrily dancing around to "All I want for Christmas is you," and singing into her wooden spoon like it's a microphone. How do I interrupt that happiness to inform her of something awful I've done?

Emily spots me awkwardly standing by the kitchen table. She grabs my hands and makes me start dancing with her, making me twirl her around every which way. As wonderful as this is, I know in my heart this just isn't right. Apparently, Emily picks up on it.

She leans over to pause the music on her phone. "Are you okay?"

It takes me a second to respond. With a shake of my head, I reply, "No, actually, I'm not."

Em tilts her head, her ponytail swishing to the side, "If it's about the family thing, don't worry. I'm not going to hold it against you."

My mind is so scattered, I don't know how to start my sentence. "Actually, it's not that. Uh, you see-"

All of a sudden, my phone starts to ring in my pocket. Because of that darn email, I'm afraid to look at my phone for the rest of the night. However, I dig it out of my pocket anyways.

"Who is it?" Emily inquires.

My face scrunches up as I look at the caller's name displayed across the screen. "Karsyn..." I look up to meet Emily's disappointed look. "I don't know why she'd be calling, they're supposed to be at a party." Emily shrugs as I answer the phone.

"Hey, what's up?"

Karsyn is frantic from the moment she starts talking, "We got in a wreck. Grayson was driving and the roads were slick from the rain and we hydroplaned into the woods and Grayson is unconscious. I've already called 911 but I need you-"

My eyes widen with every word. "Whoa, whoa, whoa, calm down. I'll be right there. Just tell me where you're at."

"Right across from the Langstons' barn, in their pasture." Thankfully, that's only five minutes from my house. I'm trying to keep my level of panic to a minimum, but Karsyn's voice keeps breaking in and out through tears, which makes staying calm even harder.

Immediately, I start moving towards the door in the living room. "Are you okay?" I ask Karsyn before I head out the door into the pouring rain.

She takes in a shaky breath, "I-I'm fine, I crawled out the back window."

My heart plummets to my stomach, "Is the car flipped?!"

"Yes! Beckett, please just hurry up and get here!" Karsyn starts sobbing into the phone, and that's when my heart breaks.

As I put on my coat, I swing the living room door open. "I'm on my way."

When I hang up the phone, all I have to do is meet Emily's eyes, and she's running right behind me.

"They hydroplaned on Langston Farm Road." I shout to Emily, who is dashing to my truck as fast as I am. I have to shout over the sound of pouring rain hitting the truck. As we both slide into our seats, she looks at me with uncertainty in her eyes.
