Winters were soon approaching and night fell earlier than Daneen had expected it to.

She balanced the cup of warm milk with one hand, while the other clutched two fat psychology books to her chest. Daneen set her eyes on the milk, moving to place it on Ammi Jaan's bedside table before climbing into the empty space next to her on the queen-sized bed.

Ammi Jaan smiled at her. "I've asked Abnosh to sleep in here with me every time she visits."

Daneen recalled how preoccupied Abnosh would be, even while she came over on holiday. "She has work to do and that disturbs you."

"Don't kid yourself. I could sleep through an apocalypse."

Daneen draped a shawl over herself. Her ears had turned cold. "You can run a marathon by yourself, you can sleep through an apocalypse, is there anything you can't do?"

"Apparently there is."

Daneen watched Ammi Jaan drop a spoonful of shakkar into her milk. She flipped open one of the beefy books. "How dare it not be possible for you?"

"It might be so for me, but not the Controller of Hearts. And I have firm faith—that He'll come through in time."
