Daneen waited until the slap of Abnosh's slippers against the floor was no longer heard before she turned her gaze to Fareeda, who had her eyes set on the bed now draped over in white sheet.

Daneen's heart suddenly picked up pace, her stomach twiating furiously. I should leave.

Daneen had just barely stepped through the doorway when a sniff reached her ears, and then another, followed by uncontrollable sobs.

Daneen contemplated her choices-if she stayed in the room in Fareeda's moment of weakness, Fareeda would push her away. And if she left, well, she'd never be able to live with herself knowing she had abandoned a person who might have needed her or anyone else for emotional support.

So Daneen did the only thing she could think of-she lowered herself on the bed next to a shaking Fareeda. Daneen took in her appearance-wet eyelashes, pink nose, and hair in a loose braid. Where is the dominating Fareeda I know?

Daneen clasped her hands together awkwardly. Fareeda then put her face in her hands, her shoulders shaking, unable to hold herself back anymore.

Daneen's heart shattered at the sight. An invisible force in her pushed her to put her arms around Fareeda, rubbing her back soothingly, while the older woman returned the embrace, burying her face into Daneen's neck. And then, she did something she could have never imagined herself doing.

Daneen wiped away Fareeda's tears with her fingers.
