I'm So Sorry // Imagine Dragons

You gotta let go

You never know the top until you get too low

Okay, so maybe Alex isn't bleeding to his death, but very close to it. This might explain why he wasn't in Daniel's class today. There he slouched in torn clothing and third degree burns and no one went to help him. In fact, everyone seems so nonchalant about it that even their phones are more interesting. It looks like I am the only one rushing over to Alex. My hands carefully peel off his mask that covered his entire head and reveal even more wounds on his face. Poor kid.

I call Ryder over, and am disappointed that he too is unimpressed by Alex. He heavily sighs and I scowl at him, angry that he doesn't see Alex in pain. Jerk. "How did this happen?" I whisper quietly, trying to not disturb the others, no matter how angry I am, they are people who we look up to. I feel obligated to be respectful towards the ex-supers.

"The train on St. Vane Boulevard fell over and busted in flames and I had to go by myself with no backup." He sucked in when I brushed against one of his wounds. Every super has some capability to heal themselves but at this point, he seems too severe to do it himself. I hold one of his hands and I command Ryder to take his other to combine our strength in completely healing him. Though, the only backfire we have is that the pain has to go somewhere, so Ryder and I feel his pain to some degree. I wince in pain that seers inside of me, feeling as if fire licks my skin. Ryder shuts his eyes but seems relatively calm. What a show off.

We sit in our seats as soon as we cure Alex and all that is left is a blush tinted in his cheeks. Of course he would be embarrassed as his manliness seemed to lower because he couldn't fix himself. My pity only made him redder. Soon we are spoken about the dangers looming around Monterey and the increase of forest fires from the three year drought are the main topic today. Forest fires are so random however and even if Monterey is on the coast, it doesn't stop the trees from scorching. Fearful about the remaining families living inside prone forests, tension becomes high. But, the briefing finishes as quickly as I doodled on my napkin that belonged under my glass of water. The worst is yet to come, I think.

The females are segregated from the males as we switch into our costumes. I never use mine so mine looks so clean and fresh whereas everyone else's is torn like Alex's or has some kind of evidence of useage. I never saved a human in my entire life and no one has yet noticed. At my age, with knowing skills, it is a shame and a disgrace to not have saved at least a hundred.

Once we change, we are put into separate rooms, for each one of us there is a an aptitude test sort of to begin with. It shows how well we use our abilities and how we react to our worst fears. Somehow, after our primary test, they knew everything about us. As I stand in my small room, it's all green, sort of like a video game room. The door shuts loudly behind me, enclosing me into my testing room. My fear is shown through my rapid heartbeat, which, by the way, they measure.

My first test is my worst fear, being unable to save someone.

On instinct and no idea on what is going on, I run. As fast as I can go, I end up finding something horrific. In front of me, I see someone surrounded by fire. It doesn't seem like much. But there is a barrier in between us, a long and deep gap in the ground between us. Almost like the ground had opened to swallow me in. According to the monitors I am supposed to be able to leap far enough to land on the other side. I'm supposed to be able to walk through the fire. I am supposed to be able to save the burning person, whoever it is. They cry out in pain. Using my excellent vision, I can see that the person is none other than Daniel. Why him? I have no idea. But I come to realize that daggers agonizingly begin to fall from the sky. I should be able to stop time and save him. But I can't concentrate. Not when I find Julie behind me tied to a tree that has been struck by lightning, automatically setting it on fire.
