The Heart Wants What It Wants

“This is wonderful, I'm gonna make you some breakfast to thank you for letting me stay last night.” Engfa quickly kissed her cheek before escaping the bed, Charlotte smiled foolishly before getting up with her.

“Can't say no to your cooking, Fa. I haven't had it since we were together in the Grand House, what, 3 years ago?”

Engfa smiled sadly, “Felt like forever ago.” An unexpected reminder of the distance they had put between themselves for so many years. Charlotte nodded with a tight lip, acknowledging the sudden turn of emotions in the air.

“It's in the past now, Fa. There's no point in dwelling in wasted time.” They exchanged a wistful smile. “Fa can use the washroom first, I'm gonna clean up after Phalo and Tofu first.”

Engfa nodded and got ready for the day, her heart slightly heavy from the painful reminder. They had come a long way, and she still had a long way to go to win Charlotte's heart and her trust. It was already the biggest blessing that the younger woman still has feelings for her and gave her a chance. She will not take it for granted.

Determined, she gave herself a mental pep talk. She was still a very busy celebrity, she knew she had to make more time for Charlotte this time around. She was at the peak of her career, yet her absolute devotion and sense of responsibility hardly allowed her to rest. She wondered if it was time to have more free time for her own life, after all she was 31. Her mind and body are easily exhausted these days, her doctor and therapist had kindly suggested for her to not overwork during her last visit.

She got out of the washroom and headed to the kitchen. The clock hung over the refrigerator said it was 7 am, however she sadly had to leave in an hour. She sighed, wishing she could spend one full day with the younger woman, no public and no camera.

As she pulled out the sparse ingredients from Charlotte’s refrigerator, she quickly decided on a simple breakfast. She looked around the kitchen for the pots and pans, and she took a minute to observe her surroundings. She had never been here in Charlotte’s house before. It was a modern mid-sized condominium. The beautiful open space concept made the house look spacious and comfortable, with the kitchen connected to the dining area. From where she stood, she could see the entirety of the living room, with its floor to ceiling windows overlooking the city of Bangkok.

Over the floors she could see pet toys scattered about, there are colorful plushies and pillows that blend harmoniously on the couch. Family and friend photos displayed on various surfaces. Overall, Charlotte’s home was very homey and obviously filled with love, Engfa felt a sense of relief inside knowing Charlotte was living comfortably and surrounded by love.

“What are you looking at, Fa?” Suddenly, Charlotte’s entrance broke Engfa out of her trance. The other woman looked concerned as she placed a gentle hand at Engfa’s hip naturally. Engfa looked down at her hand and shook her head.

“Nothing, I was just looking at your home. I’ve never been here before.” Engfa said as she looked into Charlotte’s eyes.

Charlotte smiled, “It’s not very big, but I like it the way it is. What are you making for breakfast?”

“It looks very homey, I like it.” Engfa touched the hand on her hip, they held each other’s hand. Time seemed to slow down when it was just the two of them. In this time and space, the world belonged to them and them only. No fans, no boss, no work, no pressure. “Would you like some Khao Tom, nuu?”

“Sounds perfect, let me get you the pot and show you where everything is.” The kitchen was fairly small, so their bodies brushed against each other as Charlotte passed by. Engfa exhaled as she let go of Charlotte’s hand. Together, they prepared the food with seamless chemistry. Sometimes they were in sync in reaching the spoon, sometimes Charlotte would pass Engfa things before she even had to ask. The whole time, they exchanged soft smiles with little innocent touches, acknowledging and appreciating the connection between them.
