the three girls made their way to the sugar house to meet everyone so that they could all leave for nini's birthday tonight; but the girl had something else that occupied her mind.
"finally! what took you guys so long?" seb asks when seeing the girls sit with everyone
"baking a cake with maya means you run out of ingredients pretty quickly," gina sighs as she slumps down on the sofa next to ej, who chuckled as he put his arm around her
maya sat on the beanbag next to ricky and nini avoided his gaze, pretending not to notice him looking at her as she sat down next to lucas.
ricky felt confusion wave over him as he watched nini sit down and didn't know what was up with her. he hoped she would be okay today.
"neens you okay?" big red asks, noticing how nini was staring off at a blank space
"-neens?"
nini snapped her head to the right to see lucas looking at her with slight worry
"you okay?" he asks softly
nini nods and plasters a smile on her face "yeah! o-of course! i'm just-tired i guess..."
"you woke up at like eleven," carlos chuckles, making everyone laugh while nini just keeps the smile on her face and looks down at her lap.
ricky saw that something was off with her, she might have fooled everyone else into thinking she was just 'tired' but he could tell that there was something bothering her and that she was thinking about it.
"who's turn is it to get the coffees?" ashlyn asks
"me and neens can go," ricky says, giving maya a quick kiss on the cheek and standing up from the beanbag
nini froze at the sound of those words and looked at the boy who was waiting for her, slowly getting up from the couch and following him towards the counter
"i-i might get something different today..." she says, knowing by the way he had his eyes on her that he could tell she wasn't feeling right.
"don't try and throw me off neens, what's up?" ricky asks, leaning against the counter
the girl faked a laugh "w-why would you think something was up?"
he gives her a look and she sighed, shaking her head
"it's not important." she tells him
"well, if you're acting like this something's obviously wrong," he presses, taking a step closer to her
nini suddenly felt warm and hard to breathe before taking a step back and shaking her head with a forced smile
"nope! i'm good!" she exclaims "i-you're good to wait? i have to go to the bathroom."
ricky nodded as he watched nini walk off towards the little hallway that lead to the bathrooms, sighing as he leaned back against the counter and ordered the coffees
"is she okay?"
he turns around to see maya looking where nini ran off to and he shrugged his shoulders
"i have no idea," he sighs "i think somethings up with her but she won't say anything."
"i'm sort of worried. she was fine when we saw her before finishing the cake and then the whole ride here she was just silent. she didn't even sing to taylor swift." maya whispers
"did you see her rant?" ricky asks, showing her the tweet, to which she nods
"i don't know what happened-"
ricky gestured for them to stop talking when seeing nini return from the bathroom
nini stopped abruptly when seeing maya and ricky in front of her and she felt a pit in her stomach but played it off
"hey guys!" she beams, arriving towards them
"neens are you okay?" maya asks
nini chuckles and nods "i'm fine. i think i just felt a little weird from dinner last night. but i promise i'm fine now."
"you sure? because we don't have to go to the theme park tonight if you don't feel up for it. it is your birthday." maya says
"yeah, we could all just stay at your apartment and play board games and stuff." ricky suggests
nini's smile faltered when she thought of the scenario that would happen.
they would watch a movie and she would just be seeing ricky and maya acting all couple-like and she would feel weird.
"no!" she exclaims with the same smile "i want to go to the theme park! it's going to be fun. plus, i need to beat you in the games again." she smirks, the boy raising his eyebrows
"okay nina don't even go there." he challenges, folding his arms
nini laughs and takes a few of the coffees that arrived before returning back to the table, letting out a breath as she walked back and her smile fade for two seconds before it reappeared once more.
