36. we're okay

nini sat down at the counter, watching as lucas opened cupboards - which were empty

"uh-you want takeout?" he asks sheepishly

nini shook her head with a smile and shrugged her shoulders "i guess."

"oh there's this awesome pizza place a few blocks away, i could go get some." he suggests, taking his coat

nini nods "sure, but remember to get-"

"i know. pepperoni." he grins, making her smile

"you're sure it's okay that i stay here tonight right?" she asks, following him towards the door

lucas sighs, taking the keys from the key bowl and turning back to her "neens, i told you. i'm here for you and if that means you staying here for the night, then that's okay."

nini nodded and lucas gave her one last smile before closing the door behind him and walking down the staircase of his apartment building

he made his way onto the darkened sidewalk and walked down the suburban streets, taking a turn around the corner as he arrived at the park, a few minutes away from the pizza place.

"oh-crap," he sighs as he drops his keys and picks them up, just as he stands back up, he feels someone rush into him, causing for the both of them to stumble back

"s-sorry-"

lucas knits his eyebrows together and opens his mouth "maya?"

she glanced up at him and he sees her tear-stained cheeks and her eyes red before she quickly looks away and wipes her face

"oh-uh-h-hey lucas..."

'okay. two girls crying. in the same day.'

"a-are you okay?" he asks hesitantly

he didn't really know what to do at this moment. he was never really close with maya out of the friend group and whenever they spoke it was usually just the both of them teasing each other or talking about nini.

"yeah-i'm fine." she mutters, keeping her gaze away from him

she didn't want him to know that she was hurting about her and ricky. she didn't want anyone to. because nini was probably hurting a lot more and ricky was too. she didn't want to be seen as self-centered or uncaring.

lucas hums "didn't know people cried when they were fine."

maya swallows "uh-it's-allergies..."

lucas raises his eyebrows and snorts a laugh "really? you're going to go with allergies?"

she manages a weak laugh and shrugs her shoulders "it's not important."

he shakes his head "what's up?"

maya looks up at him and smiled weakly "you want to hear about this girl's problems?"

"i want to hear about my friend's problems." he corrects with a reassuring smile

maya nods slowly, her smile remaining on her face as he takes a deep breath

"i'm on the way to get pizza for me and nini," he says quietly "you want to come?"

maya shakes her head "oh-no-i don't think that's a good idea...we're sort of in a weird place and i don't want her to get mad or hurt-"

"i heard about what happened," lucas tells her "about-the party... i'm sorry. she feels really bad. i think you and her should talk."

maya takes a deep breath "you think she wants to?"

lucas nods "definitely."

maya thinks for a few moments before exhaling deeply and she nods "okay,"
