Astraphobia

When it rains the child in me comes alive,

Most specifically when the thunder and lightning greet the sky.

I shiver with fear after every clap I hear.

The flashes of light send my heart into overdrive.

Fear runs through my mind as it would through a child's that was being chased by a deadly canine.

I use my sheets to build a fort to protect me from becoming a corpse.

I use music to try and drown the sounds out,

But it makes no difference because it's as if they're shouting out,

Like a bully would to a child even after he sees that they have started to cry.

And sleep evades me through the storm,

So I have to sit and wonder if my time will come.

And in the peak of the storm I am like a child,

That screams and hides from the monster that sleeps under their bed at night.

I feel I need to run; I feel I need to hide,

Because each time the thunder pierces the sky,

I feel as though I am about to die.

I cry, I cannot smile,

Because every time I think it's done another flash comes followed by a loud thud.

I cover my head and I try not to fret but I know not if this storm will bring my death.

I try not to panic but I fear the unknown,

I know not where the sounds in the sky come from nor where they go.

I wish sleep would take me but fear holds me close,

Hugging me tight right through the storm with no plans of letting go.

When the storm is over all is good,

I am free to do anything as I normally would

But,

When it rains the child inside me comes alive,

Most specifically when the thunder and lightning greet the sky.
