Jaxon

At lunch on Tuesday, I take a seat in front of Julia and Maddi who are going on and on about some new Spanish drama they've been watching. Apparently, Julia's been teaching Maddi some Spanish and from what I'm gathering, she's learning quickly. For a moment I consider leaving them to their conversation, but I'd have nowhere else to go, so I just keep quiet and listen. Focusing on what Juan Paola did to Valeria in the last episode is much better than remembering my morning.

It sucked. My dad had today off from work, so all he did was hound me about practice before I left for school. Yes, Dad, I finally made it on the team. No, Dad, I'm not going to throw the football with you in the backyard like we're one big happy family. And he did ask. Over and over again.

I've been annoyed ever since.

"Jaxon." Julia interrupts my thoughts. "Did you want to look through my notebook too?"

"For what?"

"For Spanish. You're taking the class, right?" She starts to dig through her pink schoolbag.

"Right." My eyes fall down to her bag just as something falls out of it. "Julia?"

"Yes?"

I cock my head to the side. "Why do you have my shades in your bag?"

"Hm?" She looks down at said shades. Maddi bought me two for Christmas a few years back. They're limited edition with my name engraved on the side—though it's hard to see if you're not specifically looking for it. Since the ones I usually use are in my uniform pocket right now, that only leaves the one Luna took from my car a couple days ago.

"Where'd you get them?"

Julia shrugs. "I got them from Luna Stone."

Of course. I bet it was yesterday morning when Julia got in an argument with her and her brother. I'd take any excuse to threaten Corey Stone, but I was already on edge with the whole Luna thing from the night before. I didn't say as much as I wanted to, actually I never even let my gaze slide to hers. No matter how much I wanted it to.

"Where did Luna even get your glasses from?" Julia folds her arms on the table.

"Does it matter?" I rub a frustrated hand over my face. "How'd you even get them from her? Tell me you didn't demand it."

For the first time she looks sheepish about the situation. "Not technically."

Maddi comes to her defense. "Julia probably thought that Luna stole them or something. Maybe to sell them."

"Sell them?" I raise an eyebrow at Maddi and then look over to Julia. "Why don't you like Luna again?"

Her eyes narrow. "Why do you care so much? You never have before." She means all the times she's tried to talk to me about Luna and I ignored her. I admit that I wasn't the best boyfriend in the past—at least not during my sophomore year.

"Just look at her." Julia finally nods her head and I find Luna sitting with Stone. "Her skirt is very unattractive and, well, she's just plain-looking."

Luna is anything but unattractive and plain-looking. Sure, she's not Julia. But nobody really is. Her outfit looks cute too, as cute as a school uniform can get. She took off the red blazer for lunch, and her grey skirt isn't exactly skin-tight, and it's not the shortest, it goes to mid-thigh.

She's the opposite of Julia though. Maybe that's why they argue a lot. Fire and ice and all that.

I mean they have one thing in common: they both have a lot of trouble sleeping.
