One week later

Jaxon

My promise to Connor started with treating my girl right.

"Do you have to go?" Luna asks in that voice I hate. I hate it because I love it. It makes me want to do anything she wants. But I can't.

Reason number eight hundred and seventy-three why I despise Corey Stone.

"You know the rules." I tease her with a quick kiss on the lips and grab the handle of my car door.

"Corey doesn't have to know."

My lips quirk up. "You sound more like me than me."

She laughs. "Okay, you can go." She scrunches her nose in the way I adore. "One more kiss though."

I don't hesitate. I cup her face and kiss her very thoroughly. It's something I've been doing a lot this week and I don't plan on stopping anytime soon.

The kiss only makes me want to stay even more, but Corey has given me a list of rules to follow in order to date Luna. I find it pretty stupid because he's not her dad—her dad actually seems to like me from the two conversations we've had—but I wasn't going to argue.

His rules are idiotic though.

Rule one, door unlocked at all times. Which okay yeah, I get that one. Rule two, curfew is at eleven. That's a crazy one, I don't even have a curfew at my own house. Rule three, no sleepovers. We break that rule sometimes. And lastly rule four, no kissing in front of Corey. We never listen to that one. He hates it.

Other than the insane rules, it's nice to be able to pull up to her house and pick her up or drop her off without getting killed by Corey. And it's even nicer when I get to kiss her goodnight. Like right now. I've been here since school ended a few hours ago, and now I don't want to leave. Especially with her lips on mine.

"I'll text you, okay?" I tell her with one more quick kiss.

"Well, I'll text you. I'm gonna write for a bit."

I blink and my jaw drops in mock outrage. "Are you, Luna Stone, telling me, Jaxon Gray—your boyfriend—that writing is more important than me?"

She's been working on her book nonstop for the past week. I don't mind. Especially once I found out that the main love interest's name is Maxon Kay. It sounds awfully familiar to my name, but when I brought it up, she told me I was crazy.

I didn't miss the blush rising to her cheeks though.

"Hey, you said it, not me." She shrugs and smiles. "Tell your parents I say hi."

I playfully roll my eyes and nod. "Yeah, yeah." I give her another kiss—maybe the hundredth one in the past hour—and get in my car to leave before I decide to forget everything and stay with her forever.

The drive home is short. I think of Luna, of course. I remind myself to text her the plans for the weekend. I promised her that we'd go to Ty's to try out their new mini burgers—they even have a vegan option for me.

I pull up in my driveway and head inside. As I walk up the stairs, I start to text Luna. Absentmindedly, I walk into my room—head still in phone—and drop my bag in the corner.

I'm right about to hit send when I hear, "Jaxon,"

I still at the voice.

I drop my phone on the floor and look up to see her standing right there in front of me. It takes me a minute to gather my thoughts with my heart in my throat at the sudden scare. But when my thoughts are very much gathered, my mouth drops open.

"Allison?"

My cousin—who isn't supposed to be here for another month—smiles her bright smile that reminds me so much of Connor. "Surprise."
