Chapter 4:

Today was the day of my mother's funeral. I was still in the hotel room, getting dressed in appropriate attire for such an event. I swiped my black lace dress from the closet and slipped it on as my clothes fell in a pool around my feet. I went over to the mirror and applied a light eyeshadow to my lids, as well as a thick layer of mascara and a smooth coat of lip gloss. Suddenly my phone rang, signaling that I was receiving a text. I'm here. It said, from Cole. I quickly texted back, Be there in 5. Grabbing my purse, I rushed out the door.

Once I had reached the car, I saw that Cole was dressed in a black tux. His curls fell to his face and his eyes showed a look of concern and pity. I got in the car, shutting the door behind me. We drove to the California State Cemetery, where my mother's burial would take place. I had invited everyone I could, informing them of the news over the phone as I heard them sob quietly through the receiver.

Cole didn't say a word to me as we drove. He just looked over at me, worry deep in his milky brown eyes, and held my hand. He rubbed the skin of my hand lightly with his thumb, which was comforting at a time like this.

After parking the car under a shady tree, we managed to head up the hill as we awaited for the funeral to start taking place. Crowds of people formed, a sea of black clumping around us. I couldn't believe I was at my mother's funeral. I mean, I knew she had problems, but I never expected her to die from them. But here I was, face to face with the woman who cause me the utmost pain and suffering.

I walked up to her as she lie in the casket, all eyes on me as people's sobs were muffled into their flimsy tissues. I know they expected me to say something heart-felt, something that a daughter should say to her mother, but I didn't. Couldn't. What was there to say?

"Have fun in hell," I whispered in her ear, hoping that it was inaudible towards the crowd. Cole watched me intently as I made my way back next to him. He hugged me close to his chest as other people went up to say their last goodbye's.

The sun shone brightly on the sea, but was hidden with misery and sadness of our passing. People sat roses on my mother's chest before they set her down into the ground, buried once and for all.

After the funeral was over, tons of individuals, much to whom I hadn't know, came up to me, expressing their grief as they continued to sob. All I could do was nod my head at their words.

"I'm so sorry for your loss, your mother was a great woman," Little did they know, I thought as I nodded.

"I'm sorry, Kendall. I wish she didn't have to go so soon," Nod.

"I c-can't believe she's actually d-dead," Nod.

All I could do was nod as they stared at my blank expression plastered on my pale face. Once they were away, Cole rubbed his masculine hands up and down my arms, me still hugged closely to his chest. "You okay?" He asked kindly. Once again, a nod. It seemed as if that was the only thing I was capable of doing today. I was still in shock and didn't know how to react to the situation that stood before me.

Just then, a girl about my age came up to me, along with an older woman of about 40.

"Hello, Kendall. I'm so sorry to hear about your mother," The woman said with much sympathy. She sounded pained when she said it, as if it really hurt her to see my mother dead. Silence. "I'm Katherine," She said, extending her hand. "Reece and I went to school together," Shaking her hand, she smile and introduced me to, which I assumed, was her daughter.

Katherine lightly nudged her with her elbow, indicating that it was time to introduce herself. "Hi, I'm Dani," she said as she smiled up at me. Her long blonde hair was formed in dozens of curls, which flowed freely down her back. Her skin was tan, making her gorgeous blue eyes pop. The resembled the color of the glistening ocean, and I couldn't help but get lost at sea.

Wait. She looked eerily familiar, I'm positive I've seen her before. "Have we met before?" I ask, starting into the deep pools of her eyes. "You know, now that I think about it, you do look familiar.." She scratched her chin as she tried to remember. I couldn't help but ponder over how familiar she looked. I know I had seen this girl before. It was on the tip of my tongue.

I clapped my hands together, finally coming to a resolution. "Weren't you the girl in the lobby? At the hotel?" She was silent for a moment before a red blush formed on her cheeks. She laughed nervously, "Oh yeah, that's where I know you from.." She turned away, remembering the time where I picked up her thong after violently crashing into her.

"I live in Washington, but I'm on vacation with my mom to visit our family here," As she babbled on, I thought about how cute she was; the way her hair curled perfectly around her face, how she got so embarrassed from the moment I picked up her lingere. Everything about her was absolutely beautiful and I couldn't help but stare as she droned on.

For a second, I forgot all about Cole. "Oh, this is Cole. Cole, Dani." They exchanged handshakes and smiled at each other.

"Dani!" Someone called from far behind us. She looked over my shoulder before saying, "That's my mom. I'd better go. It was nice meeting you guys." She said politely before hugging me. I was surprised by this, but instantly hugged her back, feeling the lightness of her breasts as they grazed upon mine. She smiled before retreating back to her mother.

As she walked away, I watched her, biting my lip while smiling like a fool. "Are you alright?" Cole asked, a smirk playing on his face. I playfully shoved him as I continued to watch Dani. Her golden hair bounced around her as she walked towards her mother. Just then she turned around, smiling at me one last time before joining her mother in conversation.
