A/N: Hey guys! I tried to make this chapter longer for you. I had a lot more time, since my mother was at work and I'm home alone, so I decided to write the next chapter and make it longer. Scotti made the character (who will be introduced in this chapter) for the character contest. Thanks again, Scott! After this, I won't be uploading for a few days. I won't make you guys wait for weeks, like most authors do. Anyway, I hope you enjoy this chapter! I think you all will a lot ;) COMMENT AND VOTE!

Chapter 9

I woke up to the bright sun creeping into my room from the windows. Rubbing the grogginess from my eyes, I sat up and searched through my closet for an outfit to wear. Today was my first day of school since I've been here. Katherine insisted I take a week off after first moving here, considering my current situation with my mother. "I understand if you don't want to," She had said to me, "I just think it would be best." I ended up taking her advice.

Today's officially my first day at Deerfield High. Spencer was instructed by Katherine to take me to school. Dani has a ride with her friend, Kara, so she doesn't usually ride with us.

Before heading downstairs, I observed myself in the mirror. My red hair was braided into a fishtail that was in a tight, side ponytail that hung over my shoulder. I drew black eyeliner over the crease of my lid to make my hazel eyes pop. After that, I applied a coat of shiny lip gloss, as well as some pink blush.

I checked myself to make sure I was presentable. That's when I noticed the scars; the new scars I had created last night after heading to my room.

Just then, I grazed my fingertips upon the broken skin, reliving the way the sharp blade felt against my skin. My favorite part about cutting was watching the blood, how it trailed down my wrist to form little pools of rubies on my veins. That's the only way I knew it was real.

The deeper I cut, the more I believed it. The more I believed the pain was going away, at least for that moment in time. It was all I could do to keep sane.

No one knew about my addiction; no one except the voices inside my pretty little mind, encouraging me to slice away the pain. It's not like I didn't want to tell anyone. There was just no one to tell. And what would I do if there was? Better yet, what would they do? Would they call the police so they could take me away? Would I be locked in a mental hospital, surrounded by a bunch of insane maniacs?

That's what I feared had I decided to tell someone.

Before stepping out my bedroom, I wrapped my wrists tightly with gauze, making sure the scars weren't at all noticable. With that, I grabbed my bag and walked out the door, where Spencer was waiting for me.

He had his arm slung out the window, laid back in his chair while he casually smoked a cigarette. Once he saw me approaching, he took one last drag before ditching the cigarette out the window and onto the gravel road.

"Since when do you smoke?" I smiled, hooking myself into my seat belt. I had always made sure to double-check it ever since the accident happened.

"Since when is it your business?" He shot back.

I couldn't see my face, but I felt my mouth form into an o shape, shocked at his sudden change in attitude. Just then, he lit another one. I focused on the flicker of the flame as the cigarette smoked and filled the car.

We drove for about twenty minutes before pulling up in the school's parking lot. I stepped out the car, slamming the door shut. From the look of it, the school was huge. I could see about six more buildings in the distance, all with a different letter on it. It was nothing like my old school: worn down with brown weeds sticking up at all sides, the paint on the walls peeling. This school - Deerfield High - had the total opposite.

"Have fun," Spencer said sarcastically, stomping on the cigarette butt before walking off.

"Wait! Aren't you gonna show me where the office is?" I called after him down the hallway. "Oh, good luck with that!" He yelled.

I huffed and crossed my arms as I tried to find my way to the office.

I turned down different hallways, taking random shortcuts until I gave up. It had been ten minutes and the bell had already rung.

In the sea of teenagers swimming throughout the school, I spotted a petite blonde with a lip ring. As soon as I saw her, I ran up to her. "Hey," I brushed my fingers through my hair as my breaths quickened, "Do you know where the office is?" She laughed as if it were the stupidest question in the world. "Follow me," she said simply before heading in the opposite direction.

She was walking kind of fast, but I eventually caught up to her. "I'm guessing you're new here?" She glanced at me from the corner of her deep blue eyes. "Yeah, I guess you could say that. It sucks being the new girl."

She scoffed. "You have no idea.." I looked into her eyes then. Behind them I noticed a glimmer of something. Maybe...pain? As soon as it was there, it was gone before I could ponder it any longer.

"Well, here we are," She held the door open for me and shone a gorgeous smile. As I looked at her, I could see her lip ring glisten under the dimly lit lights illuminating the office.

"I'm Lianna, but everyone calls me Lia." Holding out a hand, I shook it acceptably. "Kendall, but if that's too hard to pronounce, I go by Kenny." We laughed for a moment as I waited in line to retrieve my schedule. "Aren't you going to be late?" I had asked, worried that she would get in trouble. She shrugged, "Nah, it's cool. I'll just get a pass."

Every time she smiled, I couldn't help but smile back. She just had that affect on me. Her smile, along with her icy blue eyes and light blonde hair, reminded me of pure innocence.

It was my turn in line, and after a few exchanged words, the lady handed me my schedule, as well as a pass for Lia and me.

"So, I'll see you around?" She asked, a hopeful glint in her eye.

"Yeah. Yeah, that would be great," I couldn't help but smile as she walked off. It was then that I knew I had made my first friend.
