Muffled Voices

I hear a muffled voice. Scratch that. Two muffled male voices.
“Doc says she’ll have to stay here for a few days to make sure that she’s okay.”
“How is she taking the news?”
“She’s pretty upset. She hasn’t said a word to me.”
Wait? Does this mean Andy is up? I plow through the fogginess that is my brain, slowly opening my eyes. My head is no longer resting against the wall. It’s resting against Gavin’s shoulder. I’m instantly embarrassed but I try to play it off. I lift my head up slowly, blinking against the bright light. Daniel and Gavin stop talking, both looking at me. Daniel’s eyes are red, evidence that he was crying recently.
“Andy’s up if you want to go see her.”
I knew it. I sit up completely and something slides off of me. It’s Gavin’s jacket. He must have draped it over me while I was asleep.
“I’ll be back.”
Neither guy questions or speaks as I walk down the quiet hall to Andy’s room. She’s staring out a window, a blank expression on her face.
“Hey, Andy.”
She looks over at me and it only takes a second for her to break down. She stretches out her arms in my direction and I walk over to her, embracing her. I let her cry and I even join in. For once, it’s not the baby messing with my hormones, it’s my emotions.
“I didn’t know.”
“It’s okay, Andy. It’s not your fault.”
“But I was drinking and going out to parties where the air was thick with smoke.”
I lean back forcing her to look in my eyes.
“Andy, you already said you didn’t know you were pregnant. It’s not your fault.”
“But now I can’t have kids. They took out everything, Skye.”
I don’t bother lying to her about how everything will be alright. I don’t even know that myself.
I hear footsteps and a light knock at the door.
“Can we come in?”
“Yeah.”
Andy wipes tears from her eyes as Daniel and Gavin enter the room. Daniel takes his place beside his girlfriend and I approach Gavin. He leans over, whispering in my ear.
“I don’t want to split you and your friend up in this bad situation, but I think we should give them some time alone to sort this out.”
I acknowledge his response by approaching Andy.
“Hey, I’ll be back to visit later, but I’m exhausted.”
“Yeah. I understand. Thanks for taking care of me.”
I grab her hand and squeeze once before letting go.
“I just can’t wait to call Hunter and tell him that I won’t be at work for a few days.”
“I can tell him for you.”
Why did I just say that?! I don’t want to interact with him! Or do I?
“I don’t want you to put yourself in a tough spot.”
“Don’t worry. It’ll just be a phone call.”
She gives me a weak smile. I notice her hand scooting over to find Daniel’s. Their fingers lace together as she speaks.
“Thanks. I owe you one.”
